Removing rear coil spring

→ Do not reach into the danger area.

→ Relieve the tension on components before starting work.

→ Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.

Information 

• Do not press coil springs together onto the block  .
• Do not damage the surface of the coil springs (corrosion protection)  .
• Do not use solvents to clean the coil springs  .

The spring tensioning system WE 1609  is required for removing and installing the coil springs.

5. Socket wrench
6. T-bar wrench
7. Holding wrench
8. Spreader device
9. Hydraulic tensioning device

Information 

The spreader device VAS 6907/8  makes it easier to remove and install coil springs.

When the spreader device is inserted, it prevents the axle from moving upwards when tightening the coil spring.

• With the coil spring installed, insert spreader device -1- between the upper trailing arm -2- and body -3-  .
• Adjust the height of the spreader device at the hexagon until it is fitted securely  .
• Always remove the spreader device from the vehicle after installing the coil spring  .

1. Insert pressure plate with pivot bearing VAS 6907/2  down as far as possible from the outside. Press the stone guard aside slightly if necessary. → Pressure plate at the bottom

2. Insert pressure plate with locking mechanism VAS 6907/1  up as far as possible from the outside. → Pressure plate at the top

3. Insert plunger VAS 6907/4  into pressure plate with locking mechanism using T-bar wrench VAS 4907/6  .
   1. 3.1. Press locking lever in -direction of arrow-  to secure the plunger.

4. Screw both pressure plates up/down as far as required until they have three windings enclosed.
5. Screw twist lock holders -1 and 2-  of the two pressure plates together.

   Information 

   • Before removing and installing each spring, the spindle -2- at the front must always be greased lightly using the supplied grease -1-  .
   • Only use the grease provided to grease the spindle. Other types of grease will damage the spindle  .

6. Screw the spindle VAS 6907/3  into the plunger VAS 6907/4  using socket wrench VAS 6907/5

   1. 6.1. Insert holding wrench VAS 6907/7  into the bracket to counter the movement.
   2. 6.2. Pre-tension pressure plates slightly using the spindle
   3. 6.3. Check that the coil spring is seated correctly in the pressure plates.
7. Tension the coil spring using a socket wrench until the stone guard and upper and lower spring plates can be removed.
8. Remove coil spring by pulling it forward at the bottom. → Removing coil spring

9. Screw the spindle back slightly if necessary (do not unscrew fully, risk of injury!) so that the spindle projects out over the end of the coil spring.
10. Insert pre-tensioned spring into the hydraulic tensioning device VAS 6907/9  .

    1. 10.1. Left coil spring: 

       Fit underside of end of spring in the spring tensioning system at marking "L".

       Right coil spring: 

       Fit underside of end of spring in the spring tensioning system at marking "R".

    2. 10.2. Use the foot pump WE 1283  to tension the coil spring in the hydraulic tensioning device -9-  until the tension on the pressure plates -1, 2-  is relieved.
11. Unscrew spindle using socket wrench VAS 6907/5  . → Unscrewing spindle

12. Unscrew screws for the twist lock holders and remove pressure plates.
13. Relieve all tension on the coil spring.
