Installing tie rod

NOTE: Water can leak in if sealing elements are damaged.
  • Component can become damaged or may not function.

→ Replace damaged sealing elements.

→ Check that sealing elements are fitted correctly.

Information 

Carry out a close visual inspection of all parts.

The inner clamp must be replaced.

When fitting the ball joints, ensure that the bevel pinions are clean. Remove dirt or grease on bevel pinions, e.g. with a lint-free cloth. Do not use cleaning agent/solvent.

  1. Fit tie rod -2-  on the rack-and-pinion by tightening the octagon -1-  . Tightening torque 100 Nm (74 ft. lb.) 

    Make sure that no damage (scoring or similar damage) is caused to the rack-and-pinion.

  2. Fit new bellows and secure with new clamps.

    Make sure it fits perfectly both on the steering-gear housing and on the tie rod.

    1. 2.1. Push on bellows until you hear and feel it engaging securely on the tie rod.

      Dimension -a-  must be 2 mm.

    2. 2.2. Fit new outer clamp using spring band clamp pliers WE 1646  .

    3. 2.3. Fit new inner clamp using clamp tensioner.

      During fitting, make sure that the bellows is not twisted and that the clamp lug is easy to reach.

      1. 2.3.1. Fit clamp tensioner -1-  as shown. Make sure that the blades of the tensioner are positioned in the corners of the clamp.

        Tighten clamp by turning the spindle using a torque wrench -2-  . Do not tilt the tensioner while doing this.

        Make sure that the thread of the spindle on the clamp tensioner -1-  can move freely. Lubricate with MoS2 lubricant if necessary.

        If it is stiff, e.g. due to dirt on the thread, the required clamping force of the clamp will not be achieved.

        Observe the specified tightening torque:

    Type of clamp Clamp tensioner V.A.G 1682 A (Hazet) with adapter V.A.G 1682 A/1
    Clamp on passenger's side (diameter: 85 mm) Tightening torque 7 Nm (5 ft. lb.) 
    Clamp on driver's side (diameter: 59 mm) Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.5 ft. lb.)
