Replacing triggering unit for airbag

→ Prior to disconnecting the control unit, switch off ignition and remove ignition key.

→ Ensure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming.

→ Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least 90 A to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester  .

1. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
2. Select the vehicle type if required.
3. In the overview  , press [F7] to switch to the Additional menu  . The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log?" appears. Press [F11] to continue.
4. Maintenance of vehicle data  must now be selected. Press [F12] to continue.
5. Compare the displayed data with the vehicle equipment and write it down if necessary.
6. Switch off ignition and disconnect the charger from the power connection and the ground strap from the battery.
   WARNING: Incorrect handling of airbag units

   • Triggering of airbag unit.
   • System faults can occur.

   → Switch off ignition and remove ignition key or remote control (hand-held transmitter).

   → A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.

   → Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.

   → Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.

   → Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.

   → Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.

   → Replace damaged parts during removal.

   → Always position airbag units so that the blow-out opening is facing upwards, e.g. crest on driver's airbag.

   → Do not position anything on the airbag units.

   → If removed for an extended period, the airbag units must be stored in a safe place.

   → Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.

   → Do not expose airbag units to temperatures of more than 90°C.

   → Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.

   → Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.

   → Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

7. The airbag control unit can be replaced after a wait time of at least 1 minute. → 695319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TRIGGERING UNIT FOR AIRBAG 

   Vehicle with I-number 4UQ  : Continue with Step 8  . Vehicle without I-number 4UQ: Continue with Step  9

   Information 

   If the vehicle is fitted with I-number 4UQ  , you will need the part number of the driver's airbag unit, which is shown on the driver's airbag unit, for locking the airbag triggering unit.

   Take a note of the part number of the driver's airbag unit.

8. The part number of the driver's airbag unit is required for locking the airbag triggering unit.
   1. 8.1. Remove driver's airbag unit. → 695819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING DRIVER'S AIRBAG UNIT 
   2. 8.2. Take a note of the part number of the driver's airbag unit.

   3. 8.3. Install driver's airbag unit. → 695855 REPLACING DRIVER'S AIRBAG UNIT 
9. Connect the ground strap for the battery and switch the charger on again.
10. Switch on ignition.
11. Maintenance of vehicle data  must now be selected. Press [F12] to continue.
12. Compare the vehicle data with the vehicle equipment and the data you read out earlier. Change the data if necessary.
13. Go back to the overview  .
14. Select the Airbag  control unit in the overview  and press [F12].
15. Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
16. Lock  must now be selected. Press [F12] to continue.
17. Read and follow the warnings displayed on the Tester. Perform locking procedure according to menu guidance.
18. Once you have locked the airbag control unit, the occupant detection control unit must be calibrated on vehicles with the country variant C02, C34 and C36 (USA, Mexico and Canada).
    1. 18.1. Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected. Calibrate occupant detection  must be selected. Then complete the calibration process according to the instructions on the Tester.
    2. 18.2. Calibrate occupant detection  must be selected. Press [F12] to continue.
    3. 18.3. Read and follow the instructions and information on the Tester. Perform calibration according to menu guidance.
19. Switch off ignition and remove the remote control from the ignition lock.
20. Insert the remote control back into the ignition lock and switch on ignition.
21. Read out fault memory and erase it if necessary.
22. Perform function test: Switch the ignition off and then on again. The airbag warning light in the instrument cluster comes on and must go off again after a few seconds.
