Cooling System Draining, Filling And Bleeding: Draining

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Injury such as scalding could be caused by escaping steam or coolant. Make sure the vehicle cooling system is cool prior to carrying out this procedure.
CAUTION:
  • The cooling system must be maintained with the correct concentration and type of antifreeze solution to prevent corrosion and frost damage. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the engine.
  • Coolant will damage the paint finished surfaces. If spilled, immediately remove the coolant and clean the area with water.
  • Never remove the coolant expansion tank cap under any circumstances while the engine is operating. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the engine.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: LIFTING

  2. WARNING: Release the cooling system pressure by slowly turning the coolant expansion tank cap a quarter of a turn. Cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a thick cloth to prevent the possibility of scalding. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
    G11718086

Remove the coolant expansion tank cap.

  3. Remove the engine undershield.

    Refer to: ENGINE UNDERSHIELD

  4. Position a container to collect the fluid.
  5. G11718087
    • Attach a hose to the radiator drain tap. Open the tap.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Tighten the radiator drain tap.
  6. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
    G11718088
    • Disconnect the low temperature radiator return hose and allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Connect the low temperature radiator return hose.
  7. CAUTION: Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
    G11718089
    • Disconnect the transmission oil cooler hose and allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Connect the transmission oil cooler hose.
  8. G11718090
    • Disconnect the auxiliary radiator return hose and allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
    • Connect the auxiliary radiator return hose.
  9. Remove the container.

    FILLING

  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Remove the engine cover.

Refer to: ENGINE COVER - INGENIUM I4 2.0L PETROL

  12. G11718091

    Open the bleed screw.

  13. G11718092

    Open the bleed screw.

  14. G11718093

    Open the bleed screw.

  15. Fill the coolant system to the correct specification.

    Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS

  16. G11718093
    • Fill the coolant expansion tank to the maximum mark and continue until coolant is visible from the outlet.
    • Once coolant is visible from the outlet, close the bleeding point.

      Torque Specification: 2 Nm

  17. G11718092
    • Fill the coolant expansion tank to the maximum mark and continue until coolant is visible from the outlet.
    • Once coolant is visible from the outlet, close the bleeding point.

      Torque Specification: 2 Nm

  18. G11718091
    • Fill the coolant expansion tank to the maximum mark and continue until coolant is visible from the outlet.
    • Once coolant is visible from the outlet, close the bleeding point.

      Torque Specification: 2 Nm

  19. CAUTION: Do not overfill the coolant expansion tank.

Continue to fill the coolant expansion tank until the coolant level stops dropping.

  20. Install the coolant expansion tank cap.
  21. Start the engine and allow to idle.
  22. Set the heating to the HOT position.
  23. Select sand mode on the terrain response. This will assist in degassing air from the system as it moves the operating point of the thermostat to a lower position.
  24. Increase the engine speed between 2000 RPM and 3500 RPM for 2 minutes.
  25. Increase the engine speed to 4000 RPM for 20 seconds.
  26. When hot air is emitted from the heater vents, switch off the heater.
  27. Switch the engine off and allow to cool.
  28. WARNING: Release the cooling system pressure by slowly turning the coolant expansion tank cap a quarter of a turn. Cover the expansion tank cap with a thick cloth to prevent the possibility of scalding. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    • Remove the coolant expansion tank pressure cap.
    • Maintain the coolant level in the coolant expansion tank at the MAX mark.
    • Install the coolant expansion pressure cap.
  29. Install the engine cover.
