Installing rear coil spring

Information 

When installing the coil spring, make sure that the sticker -1-  on the coil spring is facing downwards.

If the coil spring is replaced: Always replace coil springs in pairs only!

1. Insert coil spring into the hydraulic tensioning device VAS 6907/9  .
   1. 1.1. Left coil spring: 

      Fit underside of end of spring in the spring tensioning system at marking "L".

      Right coil spring: 

      Fit underside of end of spring in the spring tensioning system at marking "R".

   2. 1.2. Use the foot pump WE 1283  to tension the coil spring in the hydraulic tensioning device so that the pressure plates can be inserted.
2. Tension the coil spring using pressure plates.

   1. 2.1. Insert pressure plate with locking mechanism -1-  and pressure plate with pivot bearing -2-  into the coil spring in such a way that three windings are enclosed.
   2. 2.2. Insert plunger -4-  into pressure plate with locking mechanism -1-.  Use T-bar wrench VAS 6907/6  as an aid if necessary.
   3. 2.3. Press locking lever in -direction of arrow-  to secure the plunger.

   4. 2.4. Insert spindle -3-. 
   5. 2.5. Screw pressure plates -1, 2-  together.
   6. 2.6. Tension coil spring using socket wrench VAS6907/5. 
3. Relieve tension on the hydraulic tensioning device VAS6907/9  and remove coil spring with tensioning device.

   Information 

   The spindle must only protrude so far over the coil spring that the upper spring plate can still be fitted fully on the coil spring.

4. Insert coil spring with stone guard and upper and lower spring plates.
   1. 4.1. Insert lower spring plate with pin -A-  into bore -B-  on the wheel bearing housing.

      Information 

      The spreader device VAS 6907/8  makes it easier to remove and install coil springs.

      When the spreader device is inserted, it prevents the axle from moving upwards when tightening the coil spring.

      • With the coil spring installed, insert spreader device -1- between the upper trailing arm -2-  and body -3-  .
      • Adjust the height of the spreader device at the hexagon until it is fitted securely  .
      • Always remove the spreader device from the vehicle after installing the coil spring  .

5. Screw coil spring -1-  as far as it will go into the lower spring plate -2-  .

6. Relieve tension on the coil spring and remove pressure plates.
