Removing Power-Steering Gear

Installation position of steering gear

Information 

• Fix steering wheel with wheels in straight-ahead position (engage steering column lock or clamp steering wheel in centre position with steering wheel holder). If this is not done, the airbag contact unit will have to be put in the centre position after installation of the steering gear

• Before the feed and return lines are loosened, place a suitable container underneath to collect steering fluid. 
• Wear protective goggles and gloves. 

1. Unscrew fastening nut -1-  from the ball pin for the tie-rod ball -2-  until it is flush with the thread of the ball pin.

2. Press tie-rod ball off the wheel bearing housing. > Pressing off tie rod 

   When pressing it off, make sure not to damage the rpm sensor.

   1. 2.1 Position > T10187 - ball joint puller  under the ball pin and fit it on the fastening nut.
   2. 2.2 Press tie-rod ball out of the tapered end of the wheel carrier using > T10187 - ball joint puller  .

   Screw in hexagon on the > T10187 - ball joint puller  until the tie-rod ball comes out of the tapered end of the wheel carrier.

3. Remove fastening screws -arrows-  from the heat shield (steering gear/steering shaft). If the vehicle is a Cayenne with Servotronic, pull off the connector.

4. Unscrew clamping screw -1-  on the steering column -2-  at the steering gear -3-  .

   Slide the steering column -2-  upwards and pull it down off the steering gear -3-  (-arrow A-  ).

5. Remove fastening screws -arrows-  from heat shield for rear transmission mount.

6. Loosen rear mounting for front-axle final drive (right-hand side of vehicle). Lift front-axle final drive using a suitable jack > Lifting front-axle final drive  (use a wooden block or rubber base to prevent slipping). Remove fastening screw and lift front-axle final drive just enough to access the bearing eye above the bolting point of the front-axle carrier (do not press the cardan shaft into the stop).

7. Re-insert fastening screw -arrow-  (for better access). The drive remains at the raised position and the jack can be removed.

8. Disconnect supply and return lines -arrows-  (collect steering fluid in a suitable container). Close off lines and open threaded bores using suitable stoppers.

9. Remove fastening screws on the steering gear -arrows-  .

10. To make it easier to remove the steering gear, unclip the coolant hoses -arrows-  from the brackets and move them upwards.

11. Remove fastening screws -1-  for the heat shield -2-  near the bellows -3-  for the right tie rod.

12. Push the steering gear to the right, out of the chassis subframe mounting points, and turn it to the rear. > Guiding out power-steering gear

13. Turn the steering gear approx. 90-100 degrees -arrow-  to the rear.

14. Unclip coolant hoses in the wheel housing from the retaining clip. Then, carefully push the steering gear to the right and remove it by pulling it down through the chassis subframe.
