Installing Bellows For Steering-Gear Housing (Joint Boot)

NOTE: NOTIFICATION 
Water can leak in if sealing elements are damaged. 
  • Component can become damaged or may not function. 
    1. Replace damaged sealing elements.
    2. Check that sealing elements are fitted correctly.

Information 

  1. During installation, fit new sealing rings -arrow-  on the steering gear. Take care not to damage the sealing ring when fitting the bellows.

  2. Fit new bellows and secure with new clamps. Make sure it fits perfectly both on the steering-gear housing and on the tie rod.
    1. 2.1 Push on bellows until you hear and feel it engaging securely on the tie rod. The recess all the way around must be visible - arrow-  .

    2. 2.2 Fit the bellows (not twisted) and secure with new clamps.

      Fit new outer clamp -arrow-  using > VAS 6890 - Spring Band Clamp Pliers  .

    3. 2.3 When fitting the bellows on the steering gear, make sure that the bellows is not twisted.

      Fit a new inner clamp.

      The -arrow-  indicates the clamp lug.

    4. 2.4 When fitting the large clamps, always check the following installation position (right/left). 

      The clamps must be fitted at the correct position.

      Place > V.A.G 1275A - Hose clip pliers  on the clamp lug and pre-clamp slightly. > Fitting inner clamp  It should still be possible to turn the clamps easily.

      Check the position of the clamp again, correcting if necessary, and then compress the clamp lug fully.

    5. 2.5 The clamp on the left bellows must be clamped on the steering gear in such a way that the clamp lug -arrow-  is facing horizontally with the front axle carrier in direction of travel.

      Failure to observe this can lead to constrictions in the area of the supply and return lines.

    6. 2.6 The clamp on the right bellows must be clamped on the steering gear in such a way that the clamp lug -arrow-  is facing horizontally with the front axle carrier in direction of travel.

    Failure to observe this can lead to constrictions in the area of the heat shield.

  3. Right tie rod: 

    Fit heat shield -2-  .

    Fit fastening screws -1-  on the heat shield -2-  near the bellows -3-  for the right tie rod. > Tightening torque 10 (7.5 ftlb.) Nm

  4. Screw lock nut onto the tie rod.
