Mounting Engine On Transmission

WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    • Secure components to prevent them from falling down.
  1. Insert special tool > 9689 - centering pin  into the converter (optional). Roughly position the torque converter and drive plate so that the centering pin passes through a bore on the drive plate.

  2. Lift the engine with the workshop crane and move it into installation position with respect to the transmission. Put engine and transmission together. The dowel sleeves on the engine must slip perfectly into the bores on the transmission bell housing.
  3. Fit and screw in fastening screws for securing transmission to engine. This involves screwing in screws on the engine side and screws on the transmission side. For tightening torques, see

  4. Remove special tool > 9689 - centering pin  and fit torque converter screws. For tightening torques, see

  5. Fit engine mounts.
    1. Carefully lift engine/transmission unit.
    2. Remove wooden block under the transmission.
    3. Fit engine mounts according to the markings applied during removal. Lug on engine mount fits into the hole on the engine support arm. Fit screws and new nuts.

    4. Carefully lower engine/transmission unit.
    5. Screw on engine mounts.

  6. Fit the starter.

    > WM, 276019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING STARTER

  7. Fit new seals and nuts on catalytic converters and move into installation position. Tighten the nuts securing the exhaust manifold to the catalytic converter -Arrows-  . Install catalytic converters

  8. Fit heat shield on exhaust manifold. Press heat shield into the upper sheetmetal clips. Then, fit sheetmetal holder on the heat shield and on the intake pipe -Arrows-  . > Tightening torque 20 Nm

  9. Route oxygen sensor cable through the heat protection and close heat protection. > Heat protection on cable

  10. Clip in vent line on the transmission -arrow-  .

  11. Fit the coolant hoses and valves above the transmission.
  12. Secure coolant pipes on the transmission (two screws). -Arrows-  > Tightening toque 9 Nm

  13. Fit ATF line on the engine. -arrow-  > Tightening torque 10 Nm (7 ftlb.)
