Preliminary Work

CAUTION: Heavy components

→ Wear personal protective gear.

→ Get someone to help if necessary.

Information 

For safety reasons, the fuel tank should only be removed and installed when empty. For details of how to drain the fuel tank, see → 2010EN DRAINING AND FILLING THE FUEL TANK 

Information 

When pulling off fuel supply lines, use cloths to soak up fuel (wrap around lines).

  1. Place a warning sign in a clearly visible position in the work area or on the vehicle.
  2. Relieve the fuel pressure.
    1. 2.1. Switch off ignition.
    2. 2.2. Pull out the fuse for the fuel pump/control unit.
    3. 2.3. Start the engine and wait until the engine stops running by itself.
  3. Drain the fuel tank if necessary.→ Draining Fuel (Emptying Fuel Tank) 2010EN Draining and filling the fuel tank (draining and filling fuel)

    The fuel tank should be drained before opening the flanges under the rear seat. If the displayed fuel level is less than the reserve, there is no need to drain the tank.

  4. Remove (pull off) all covers -1, 2 and 3-  in the bodyshell opening.
    1. 4.1. Remove rear seat. → REMOVING REAR SEAT

  5. Release and remove upper flange connections (expose flange rings).
    1. 5.1. Release and remove both connections -1-  on the tank ventilation flange.

      To do this, press the push-on connectors from below using assembly tool T10118  as required.

    2. 5.2. Release connections -1 and 2-  and remove them from the right flange.

    3. 5.3. Disconnect electric connection -1-  on the left flange.

  6. Remove rear wheel housing liner at the right.
  7. Remove rear axle (spring struts and rear axle housing) and push it aside on a lifting platform.
