Installing front wheel bearing housing

CAUTION: Wheel carrier raised incorrectly
  • Risk of squashing
  • Risk of damage to components

→ Wear personal protective gear.

→ Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

NOTE:

When fitting the upper trailing arms to the wheel bearing housing, the pins of the upper trailing arms must be pressed fully into the bores on the wheel bearing housing.

NOTE:
  • All screws and threaded joints on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on its wheels, or the wheel suspension is raised with a universal vehicle lift. Dimension -1-  , from lower edge of wing to center of axle corresponds to vehicle position. The current height can be found in →  4495TW ADJUSTMENT VALUES FOR SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT  . Always observe the following points!

    Dimension 1 - center of wheel to lower edge of wing (rear axle shown) 

  • Screws and nuts are Geomet-coated and must not be greased  .
  1. Installation is performed in reverse order.

    Observe specified tightening torques:

    Upper trailing arm to wheel bearing housing: Tightening torque 45 Nm (33 ftlb.) 

    Lower control arm to wheel bearing housing: Tightening torque 140 Nm (104 ftlb.) 

    Brake cover plate to wheel bearing housing: Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.) 

    Drive shaft to wheel hub (Step 1: Wheels suspended in mid-air, operate brake while tightening): Tightening torque 200 Nm (148 ftlb.) 

    Drive shaft to wheel hub (Step 2: Wheels on the ground): Torque angle 180°
