Procedure For Eliminating Noises And/Or Vibrations At The Wheel Bearing

The test drive must be carried out on an even road surface, observing the road traffic regulations.

Information

During the test drive, pay attention to the following information in order to localise the faults:

Locating noise at front/rear axle, on left/right
Noises when coasting, when steering in different speed ranges (possibly caused by wheel bearing)
Pulsing brake pedal when operated, depending on speed
Vibrations when braking (possibly caused by brake disc run-out or build-up on brake pad)
Wobbling steering wheel (possibly caused by wheels, brakes)
Vibrations during acceleration (possibly caused by the drive shaft)

Perform a visual inspection for signs of abrasion. → 4400IN WHEELS AND TYRES Check axial/radial play of the bearings (wheel bearings, trailing-arm bearings, ball joints) on the vehicle using the wheel. Swap wheels (fit wheels from a vehicle with no complaints onto the vehicle with the complaint). If OK. → WM 440002 CHECKING DISC WHEELS → WM 440093 BALANCING/OPTIMISING WHEELS	Perform a visual inspection for signs of abrasion. → 4400IN WHEELS AND TYRES Check axial/radial play of the bearings (wheel bearings, trailing-arm bearings, ball joints) on the vehicle using the wheel. If the noise changes when cornering in either direction and in different speed ranges, the wheel bearing must be replaced. → WM 405719 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT WHEEL BEARING → WM 425819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR WHEEL BEARING (ALL MODELS)	Check for play/leaks at trailing arm/ball joint. → 402055 REPLACING BEARING FOR TRAILING ARM → WM 433019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT SPRING STRUT (AIR SPRINGS) Inspect brake disc level run-out. → WM 465002 CHECKING FRONT BRAKE DISCS (WEAR ASSESSMENT) (ALL MODELS) Replace wheel bearing. → WM 405719 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT WHEEL BEARING → WM 425819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR WHEEL BEARING (ALL MODELS)
