- Using universal drive shaft/wheel hub puller as of model '86 Nr.87-1, push (press) peg into the wheel hub. → Insertion length: 20 mm+5 mm
- Unscrew the plastic nuts -arrows- on the front wheel housing liner and insert spring tensioner VW 552 into the upper opening of the wheel housing (double panel) and leave it hanging.
- Release lower spring strut. In other words: carefully raise the axle strut using a suitable lift so that the fastening pins for the lower spring strut can be removed easily. Use a -lift with rubber base- in order to prevent slipping.
- Remove the lower connecting rod -arrow- .
- Secure the -upper axle strut- with the spring tensioner VW 552 (vehicle in illustration with conventional suspension) to prevent damage to the top ball joint. In other words: engage the -spring tensioner- on the axle strut and pre-tension with the wing nut. The lift can now be removed.
- Push protection over the drive shaft, loosen the drive shaft at the transmission and set it down carefully.
- Press out tie rod on wheel carrier with press-out tool T10187 . → see Fig 6 When pressing out, screw lock nut on flush (protects the ball joint thread).
- Unclip cable for wear monitor and release holder on wheel carrier.
- Disconnect the cable on the ABS sensor.
- Press out wheel carrier at the top with press-out tool T10187. → see Fig 7 When pressing out, screw lock nut on flush (protects the ball joint thread).
- One mechanic must carefully pull upper wheel carrier out and turn the steering. The second mechanic must carefully pull out the drive shaft.
