Cleaning The Cooling System

→ Ventilate the work area well.

→ Never ingest or inhale.

→ Read specific information on the Hazard Sheet.

→ Wear personal protective gear.

→ Do not smoke, eat or drink in the work area.

Information 

• Coolant hoses and sealing rings swell following long-term contact with engine oil and become softer. They can crack or start to leak. Check and replace the components if you suspect that the material has swollen. 
• The currently approved cleaning agent is "Frostox R Spezial" 000.043.204.39 (status 12/07). 
• A cleaning mixture contains only water and cleaning agent. Antifreeze is not required for cleaning. 
• Use a 50:50 mixing ratio (50% cleaning agent to 50% water). 
• Coolant additives, coolants and cleaning agents must be disposed of according to the respective, applicable national laws. 
• Removed seals in the cooling system must always be replaced with new ones following disassembly. 
• The steps must be repeated as often as required until no more oil rises to the surface in the coolant reservoir. Remove the reservoir and clean it separately if necessary. 
• The radiator cleaning agent mixture must be approx. 23 litres in the filling canister of the filling device filling device 9696. 

Information 

• The coolant hoses leading into the wheel housing (and auxiliary heating) and for interior heating must also be opened if they are heavily soiled in order to drain off remaining coolant.

2. Replace defective components.
3. Fill the cooling circuit with the cleaning agent mixture. To do this, proceed with the cooling system analogously to filling the coolant. → 193817 DRAINING AND FILLING COOLANT ON DFI ENGINES (INCLUDES BLEEDING) 
4. Start the vehicle.

   Information 

   • The lid of the coolant reservoir can be opened slightly and carefully several times during the cleaning process, thereby allowing oil sludge to emerge continuously. 
5. After the vehicle has been bled and the coolant temperature is > 80 °C, let the stationary vehicle run at average revs (2000 to 3000 rpm) for at least 15 minutes. The coolant temperature regulator (thermostat) must be open and all hoses must be equally hot.
6. Switch off the engine.
   WARNING: Hot fluid

   • Danger of scalding

   → Let the fluid cool down.

   → Wear personal protective gear.

7. Open the coolant reservoir carefully and slowly in an anti-clockwise direction using gloves and a cloth. Drain or collect oil sludge from the coolant reservoir.

8. Drain the cooling system again.

9. Use plenty of hot water to rinse out any oil that has adhered inside the coolant reservoir. This will rinse out the cooling system.
10. Repeat this cleaning process several times if necessary.

    Information 

    • Use a cloth soaked in solvent naphtha to remove adhering oil sludge from hoses or components. 
11. Then fill the cooling system with clean water as required, heat the engine, stop it and drain the last of the remaining cleaning agent.
12. When you have finished, fill the system with the correct antifreeze mixture in accordance with specifications. → 193817 DRAINING AND FILLING COOLANT ON DFI ENGINES (INCLUDES BLEEDING)
