Checking Valve Stem Guide (Valve Tilt Clearance)

  1. Turn cylinder head around so that the compression chamber is visible.
    NOTE: Dirt and contamination
    • Risk of damage to units or components

    → Protect components from dirt and contamination.

    → Clean or replace dirty components.

  2. Universal Dial Gauge Bracket VW 387 -1-  must be secured to the cylinder head. Secure a suitable dial gauge with a measuring tip in the Universal Dial Gauge Bracket VW 387  .

    Information 

    • A new valve must be used for the test  .
    • Intake valves and exhaust valves have different shank diameters. The fitting new valve must be used for checking the respective valve guide  .
  3. Insert new valve into valve guide from the combustion chamber. Push it in until the valve stem end is flush with the valve guide.
  4. Engage measuring tip tightly on the side of the valve disc and tilt valve to and fro at the valve guide -see arrow-  .

  5. If the tilt clearance is greater than 0.8 mm, the cylinder head must be replaced.
