Installing Timing-Case Cover: Notes

Information 

If cold or excessively low-tempered components are sealed to each other by applying sealant, leaks can occur because of condensed water forming or components distorting. Components must be uniformly at least → Temperature: 17°C  .

Information 

• Acetone can be used to clean the sealing faces. Ventilate this for 5 minutes before applying more sealant  .

Information 

• The timing-case cover must be aligned using a dial gauge or steel gauge  .
• The timing-case cover must not project over the lower part of the crankcase. Even the slightest projection must be corrected  .
• It must not be less than  (-dimension A-  )1/10 mm  (-dimension A < 1/10 mm-  ).

Information 

Carefully apply Loctite 5900 sealant on the timing chain housing in such a way that sealant cannot get into the screw holes when you fit the timing-case cover. Loctite 5900 can increase the friction coefficient of the aluminum screw. The sealant must not overflow.

1. Clean dirt and grease off the sealing faces of the engine and timing-case cover.
   1. 1.1. Also clean sealing faces -arrows-  using Loctite 7515.

2. Fit the new metal seals -2, 3, 4-  on the timing-case cover.

3. Fill the openings in the metal seals with sealant -1, 2-  . Apply sealant at the specified markings on the engine → see Fig 3→ see Fig 3. Apply the sealant in such a way that no excess sealant can expand into the engine when the timing-case cover is fitted (blocked oil ducts).

   1. Applying sealant on lower timing-case cover
   2. Applying sealant on connection point between timing-case cover and cylinder head, top
   3. Length of sealant application 20 mm 
4. When fitting the timing-case cover, press the tensioning rail away from the camshaft controller (cylinder 1) towards the timing chain using a screwdriver (second worker required).
5. Fit timing-case cover straight on without letting it slip out of place.
6. Screw down all fastening screws by hand. At this stage, the screw heads should not be all the way down.
   1. 6.1. Replace all screws.
7. Press the timing-case cover upwards slightly and tighten the four fastening screws [approx. 1 - 2 Nm (0.5 - 1.5 ft. lb.)] so that the timing-case cover grips a little. Then align the timing-case cover.
8. Align timing-case cover within 5 minutes and screw it on  .
