Setting Timing For Camshafts
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2018 Porsche Cayenne, 2017 Porsche Cayenne, 2016 Porsche Cayenne, 2015 Porsche Cayenne, and 2014 Porsche Cayenne. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Incorrect handling of crankshafts
- Risk of damage to the timing system
→ Never turn the crankshaft against the rolling direction or when the chain tensioner is removed.
→ Proceed carefully with your work.
→ Only turn the engine at the crankshaft.
→ After working on the camshaft, re-set the valve timing.
→ Observe general warning notes and working regulations.
NOTE:
Timing not set correctly
- Risk of engine damage
- Rough running engine
- Loss of engine power
→ Do not use force when fitting the staking tool.
→ Make sure that the gap is equal on both sides.
→ When inserting the staking tools, do not use force to turn the camshafts against any resistance.
→ The engine must be exactly at top dead center.
→ The opposite cylinder must be at ignition TDC.
Information
- The adjustment of the oil pump with balance shaft with respect to the crankshaft must be correct .
- Correct adjustment of the balance shaft with respect to the crankshaft is a prerequisite for the valve timing of the camshafts .
- If the engine has vibrations in the crank drive, also check that the balance shaft is set correctly. For details of how to adjust the balance shaft , see → 172019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OIL PUMP
- Turn the crankshaft at the vibration balancer so that the vibration balancer's staking bore -2- is located approx. 45° degrees in front of the lower staking point on the timing-case cover -1- .
- Loosen central screws on the four camshaft controllers.
- Remove chain tensioner. → 153519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TIMING CHAINS ON V6 DFI ENGINES
- Auxiliary Chain Tensioner 9683/1 must be screwed in hand-tight. Connect 1 bar of compressed air and slowly increase to 5.0 up to 5.5 bar (prevents the assembly chain tensioner from "crashing" against the timing chain).
- Turn the camshafts at the hexagon until the flat surfaces are pointing upwards.
- Staking Tool For Valve Timing 9861
must be fitted on the camshafts.
- 6.1. Tighten screws to 20 Nm (15 ft. lb.) so that the camshafts are moved over the flat surfaces -arrows- into the exact position.
- Secure the crankshaft.
- 7.1. Locating Pins 9595/1 must be inserted into the staking bore on the vibration balancer -2- .
- 7.2. Turn the crankshaft at the vibration balancer (approx. 45°) -3- so that the staking pin in the vibration balancer slips into the lower staking point on the timing-case cover -1- .
- 7.3. At the same time, exert gentle pressure on the staking pin while turning.
- If You Accidentally Turn The Vibration Balancer Too Far, Do Not Try To Turn It Back Again!
- 8.1. The staking tools must be removed and the camshafts must be turned in such a way that there is only the slightest pressure on the valve springs.
- 8.2. Turn the crankshaft once and start the setting procedure again.
- Camshafts and crankshaft are fixed correctly.
- 9.1. Screwed-in assembly chain tensioner with approx. 5.0 to 5.5 bar pressure.
- 9.2. Two fixed staking tools on the camshafts.
- 9.3. Staking pin secures crankshaft in TDC of cylinder 1.
- Tighten central screws on the four camshafts as instructed. To do this, counter at the hexagon on the camshaft controllers and observe the specified sequence!
- 10.1. Tightening Torque: Initial tightening 30 Nm (22 ft. lb.) Final tightening +40°
- 10.2. Tightening sequence:
Tightening Sequence For Central Screw For Camshaft Controller (Item 2) Result: Cylinder Bank: Camshaft: 1. Bank 1, Cylinders 1-3 Outlet 2. Bank 1, Cylinders 1-3 Intake 3. Bank 2, Cylinders 4-6 Intake 4. Bank 2, Cylinders 4-6 Outlet - Remove tools.
- Install chain tensioner.
- Check by turning the engine twice.
