Removing Pistons

Information

The pistons are removed one after the other .
Mark the pistons, connecting rods/connecting rod caps and their assignment to each cylinder .
Pay attention to installation position of welded markings .
Pistons and connecting rods are laid on a clean surface, arranged by cylinder .
Connecting rod bolts must always be replaced .
Do not confuse worn bearing shells (mark them accordingly) .
Bearing shells that are worn down to the nickel layer must be replaced .
Connecting rod bearing shells should always be replaced .

Information

Mark the installation position and cylinder assignment with chalk or a water-resistant felt-tip pen to facilitate re-installation of used pistons .
Never use a prick punch or scriber as these will damage the coating on the piston crown .

Mark installation position of pistons before removal.
Installation position: Arrow -1- on piston crown is pointing to the pulley.

- Only replace connecting rods in sets .
- Do not confuse connecting rod bearings .
Mark connecting rods and connecting-rod bearing caps before removal -arrow- .

Turn the crankshaft so that the crank pin of the piston to be removed is standing straight up.
Remove piston of cylinder 1 by unscrewing the connecting rod bolts.
Remove the connecting rod bearing cap and place it on a clean surface.
Press piston up out of the cylinder and counter with your other hand.
Fit the connecting rod bearing cap again immediately on the big end of the connecting rod bearing with the bearing shells and place the entire piston on a clean surface.

Remove pistons for cylinders 2-6 using the same procedure.

Remove oil spray jets if necessary. →
Opening pressure: 1.3 bar.
Measure pistons and cylinder bore. → 131003 MEASURING PISTONS (INCLUDES MEASURING CYLINDER BORE) - section on "Measuring"
