Assembly Overview - Pistons And Connecting Rods

- Fastening Screw For Bearing Cover → Tightening Torque: 35 Nm (26 ft. lb.) +90°
- Oil thread and contact surface
- Connecting-Rod Bearing Cap
- Mark allocation with paint/colored marker for re-installation -B-
- Always check the following during fitting: The wide collar -A- must be facing the same side on the connecting rod and connecting-rod bearing cap
- Bearing Shells/Worn Bearing Shells Must Be Replaced
- Check installation position
- Check version: Upper bearing shell (towards the piston) must be made of wear-resistant material.
- Identifying feature of new bearing shells: Black line on running surface close to the connection point
- Check that retaining lugs are seated securely.
- Connecting Rod
- Mark cylinder allocation with paint/colored marker -B-
- Axial play for each con-rod pair: new: 0.20....0.44 mm
- Only replace in sets
- Always check the following during fitting: The wide collar -A- must be facing the same side on the connecting rod and connecting-rod bearing cap
- Piston-Pin Circlip Replace
- Piston Pin
- Heat stiff pistons to 60 °C
- Remove and install using Drift VW 222 A .
- Piston
- Mark installation position and allocation to cylinder
- Replace piston if piston crown or shank is cracked
- Piston-Pin Circlip Replace
- Piston Rings
- Offset gap by 120°
- Remove and install using piston ring pliers
- Installation position: "TOP" marking or side with lettering towards piston crown
