Installing Tie Rod

Information 

• The tie rods are delivered preset as an assembly (tie rod/tie-rod ball). 
• If the joint boot is to be used again, before installing inspect for wear (cracks, slits) and check that the sealing faces are clean. 
• Carry out a close visual inspection of all parts. 
• When fitting the ball joints, ensure that the bevel pinions are clean. Remove dirt or grease on bevel pinions, e.g. with a lint-free cloth. Do not use cleaning agent/solvent. 

1. During installation, fit new sealing rings -arrow-  on the steering gear. Take care not to damage the sealing ring when fitting the bellows.

2. Fit tie rod -2-  on the rack-and-pinion by tightening the octagon -1-  . Tightening torque 100 Nm (74 ftlb.) +10° 

   Make sure that no damage (scoring or similar damage) is caused to the rack-and-pinion.

3. Fit the bellows (not twisted) and secure with new clamps.

   Fit new outer clamp -arrow-  using assembly tools for spring band clamps Nr.72  .

4. When fitting the bellows on the steering gear, make sure that the bellows is not twisted.

   Fit a new inner clamp.

   The -arrow-  indicates the clamp lug.

5. When fitting the large clamps, always check the following installation position (right/left). 

   The clamps must be fitted at the correct position.

   Place pliers for lug hose clamp Nr.74  on the clamp lug and pre-clamp slightly. → Fitting inner clamp 

   It should still be possible to turn the clamps easily.

   Check the position of the clamp again, correcting if necessary, and then compress the clamp lug fully.

6. The clamp on the left bellows must be clamped on the steering gear in such a way that the clamp lug -arrow-  is facing horizontally with the front axle carrier in direction of travel.

   Failure to observe this can lead to constrictions in the area of the supply and return lines.

7. The clamp on the right bellows must be clamped on the steering gear in such a way that the clamp lug -arrow-  is facing horizontally with the front axle carrier in direction of travel.

   Failure to observe this can lead to constrictions in the area of the heat shield.

8. Right tie rod: 

   Fit heat shield -2-  .

   Fit fastening screws -1-  on the heat shield -2-  near the bellows -3-  for the right tie rod. Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)

9. Fit tie-rod ball -2-  on wheel bearing housing and tighten fastening nut -1-  . Tightening torque 90 Nm (67 ftlb.) 

   Always use a new nut following removal.
