Installing Steering Column (Centre)

Information 

• Observe the tightening sequence of steering column at mounting bracket. 
• Once the battery is disconnected, perform the work required for full restoration of normal driving. →  2X00IN WORK INSTRUCTIONS AFTER DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY 
• Calibrate the steering-angle sensor using the Porsche System Tester. →  456005 INITIALIZING AND CALIBRATING STEERING-ANGLE SENSOR 
• The electric steering column locking mechanism (ELV) must be taught using the Porsche System Tester. You can get the required immobilizer code with the vehicle identification number from IPAS or from your importer. 
• The electrically adjustable steering column must be adapted in the vehicle. →  729319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CONTROL UNIT FOR MEMORY SEAT ADJUSTMENT 
• Always replace the fastening screw -1- for the universal joint of the steering column.

• Replace locking screws and nuts. 
• Visually inspect all parts. 
• Use specified tightening torques. 

Information 

The steering column must only be replaced as a complete unit. Individual components cannot be disassembled or replaced.

1. Insert the entire steering column into the vehicle through the passenger compartment.
2. Secure combination connector and electric plug connection for the steering column.
   1. 2.1. Plug in electric plug connection -2-  at the steering column -arrow-  and lock it -a-  .

   2. 2.2. For electrical steering column adjustment:  Plug in combination connector -4-  and lock it -b-  .
   3. 2.3. Secure the combination connector to the mounting bracket holder using a new tie-wrap -1-  .

3. Guide the steering column -1-  into the mounting bracket.

   Fit fastening screws -2-  for the steering column -1-  on the mounting bracket from below and then tighten them.

   Observe the specified tightening sequence: Tighten anti-clockwise, starting with the rear right fastening screw. Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)

4. Fit the side fastening screw -2-  for the steering column -4-  in the mounting bracket and then tighten it using multiple-tooth socket-wrench insert Nr.31  . Counter at the fastening nut -3-  while doing this. Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)

5. On vehicles with a knee airbag:  Install holder -2-  and tighten fastening screws -1-  . Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.)

6. Fit steering column -2-  on the steering gear -3-  .

   1. 6.1. Slide the steering column -2-  onto the steering gear AS FAR AS IT WILL GO -3-  from above -arrow A-  .
   2. 6.2. Screw in and tighten clamping screw. Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 ftlb.) +90° 

      Always use a new clamping screw. 

7. Fit and tighten lock nuts used to secure the sealing bellows to the bulkhead -arrows-  . Tightening torque 4 Nm (3 ftlb.) 

   For diesel engines:  Fit and tighten lock nuts used to secure the sealing bellows from inside the wheel housing -arrows-  . Tightening torque 4 Nm (3 ftlb.)

8. Fit the heat shield -2-  on the steering gear and screw in fastening screws -1-  . Tightening torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)
