Installing Rear Wheel Bearing Housing (Wheel Carrier)
WARNING:
Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly
- Risk of squashing
- Risk of damage to components
→ Wear personal protective gear.
→ Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
- The pictures shown in this document may differ from the original .
Information
- All screws and bolts on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on its wheels, or the wheel suspension is raised with a universal vehicle lift. Dimension -X- , from lower edge of wing to center of axle corresponds to vehicle position . For the current height values, please refer to the adjustment values for suspension alignment → 4495TW ADJUSTMENT VALUES FOR SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT .
- Visually inspect all parts .
- Replace self-locking nuts .
- Replace all expansion screws (screws fitted using torque angle tightening procedure) .
- Use correct tightening torques and torque angle . → 4X00IN TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR REAR AXLE
Information
Before installing the shaft, replace the lock ring (circlip) on the shaft as well as the shaft sealing ring in the final drive → 392255 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SEALING RING FOR HALFSHAFT FLANGE (WITHOUT DIFFERENTIAL LOCK) .
Make sure not to damage the sealing ring when guiding the shaft into the final drive.
- The inner end of the drive shaft must be held with both hands at the joint and inserted into the rear axle differential with a quick jerk. The outer joint must be held by a second mechanic in order to prevent damage .
- Check that the joint is seated correctly in the rear axle differential: Hold the joint with both hands and pull outwards .
- Visually check that the plastic protective rings are flush on the rear axle differential .
- Grease the toothing with a little Optimoly TA aluminum paste and fit the drive shaft -1-
into the wheel bearing housing -2-
(-A-
). When doing this, press the inner joint together tightly.
Information
- The drive shaft must be pulled in as far as it will go using the fitting tool T10206 .
- Pull the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing.
- Grease the mounting-face ring of the axle nut with a little Optimoly TA aluminum paste. Screw on the axle nut.
- After you have pulled the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing, it still needs to be pre-tightened to the specified tightening torque.
- 4.1. In the first step, "before installation", tighten the drive shaft to → Tightening torque: +130 Nm (+96 ftlb.) . To do this, place the wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft and tool on the floor (do not damage the brake cover plate) and pull in the drive shaft. 2. A second mechanic is required! -arrow-
- 4.2. The second tightening step is performed when the wheel bearing housing is installed in the section on "Subsequent work"! Observe the correct tightening torque. → 4X00IN TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR FRONT AXLE
- Left side: Replace the plastic protective ring on the transmission side, which you broke off during removal.
- Use a new sealing ring in the rear axle differential and a new protective ring and circlip on the drive shaft.
- Fit the wheel bearing housing (second mechanic required). First, fit the drive shaft on the rear axle differential housing with a quick, strong tap.
To make installation easier, raise the wheel carrier slightly with a universal jack! Use a rubber base to prevent the wheel carrier from slipping! → Tie rod assembly aid (shown as an example)
- Fit the screws -1, 2- on the inside of the two upper wishbones. → 4X00IN TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR REAR AXLE
- Fit the lower trailing arm -2- on the wheel bearing housing -1- . → 421119 REMOVING AND INSTALLING LOWER TRAILING ARM , → 4X00IN TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR REAR AXLE
- Fit the tie rod (toe control arm) on the wheel bearing housing. → 420919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TIE ROD (TOE CONTROL ARM) , → 4X00IN TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR REAR AXLE
- Fit the spring strut on the wheel bearing housing. → Installing Rear Spring Strut (Steel Springs) , → 4X00IN TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR REAR AXLE
- Fit the brake disc if necessary. → Installing Rear Brake Disc
Fit the brake calliper. → Installing Rear Brake Calliper
- Plug in the central connector -1- for the ABS wire harness -A- and lock it -a- .
- Clip the mounting -2- for the ABS wire harness into the position designed for it -3- on the body -B- .
