Installing Steering Column (Center)
Information
- Observe the tightening sequence of steering column at mounting bracket .
- Once the battery is disconnected, perform the work required for full restoration of normal driving. → 2X00IN WORK INSTRUCTIONS AFTER DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY
- Calibrate the steering-angle sensor using PIWIS Tester II . → WM 456015 INITIALIZING AND CALIBRATING STEERING-ANGLE SENSOR (ALL MODELS) .
- If the steering column is replaced, the ELV (electronic steering column locking mechanism) control unit must be taught. This is done using PIWIS Tester II. You can get the necessary immobilizer code from IPAS or from your importer by specifying the vehicle identification number. This process can be avoided by using the previously installed control unit .
- Following replacement, the electrically adjustable steering column must be adapted in the vehicle (using PIWIS Tester II). Select Front-end electronics. Select Drive links/checks and then select "Steering column adjustment normalizing run" under Teach .
- Replace locking screws and nuts .
- Visually inspect all parts .
- Observe specified tightening torques .
- Insert the entire steering column into the vehicle through the passenger compartment.
- Fit steering column on intermediate steering shaft.
- 2.1. Slide the steering column -1-
onto the intermediate steering shaft -2-
from above as far as it will go -arrow-

The splines -inset- ensure that the intermediate steering shaft can only be fitted at a certain position -arrow- .

onto the intermediate steering shaft -2-

- Secure combination connector and electric plug connection for the steering column.
- 3.1. Lock the combination connector -1- at the mounting bracket holder.
- 3.2. Plug in electric plug connection -2- at the steering column -arrow- and lock it -a- .
- 3.3. Plug in combination connector -4- and lock it -b- .
- Secure the steering column.
Observe tightening sequence: Tighten the four fastening nuts -2- first.

- 4.1. Insert the steering column into the mounting bracket.
- 4.2. Place fastening nuts -2- for the steering column -1- in the mounting bracket from below and then fit them. Tightening torque 23 Nm (17 ftlb.)
- 4.3. Fit fastening screw -2- for the steering column -4- . Counter at the fastening nut -3- while doing this. Tightening torque 12 Nm (9 ftlb.)
- Fit the tie-wrap -2- at the steering column -1- .
