Removing Front Side Airbag

WARNING: Incorrect handling of airbag units
  • Triggering of airbag unit.
  • System faults can occur.

→ Switch off ignition and remove ignition key or remote control (hand-held transmitter).

→ A power supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.

→ Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.

→ Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.

→ Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.

→ Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.

→ Replace damaged parts during removal.

→ Always position airbag units so that the blow-out opening is facing upwards, e.g. crest on driver's airbag.

→ Do not position anything on the airbag units.

→ If removed for an extended period, the airbag units must be stored in a safe place.

→ Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.

→ Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.

→ Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.

→ Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.

→ Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

  1. Detach center cover.
    1. 1.1. Press cover -1-  together slightly at the sides -arrows B-  and use a plastic wedge to disengage the locking mechanism -inset-  .
    2. 1.2. Insert your hand in behind the top of the cover -1-  and disengage it by pulling it up out of the backrest frame -2-  (-arrow A-  ).

      Information 

      Carefully disengage cover for front middle backrest. Do not bend the retaining hook.

    3. 1.3. Only for cover with seat ventilation: Unclip  air-guide cowl from the backrest -arrows A-  and pull forwards -arrow B-  .

    4. 1.4. Unclip cover with cushion and place it on the lower part of the seat -arrow-  .

  2. Detach backrest cover.
    1. 2.1. Detach cover for middle backrest.
    2. 2.2. Carefully press cover out of the backrest shell -1-  using a plastic wedge -2-  to disengage it from the clips -3-  (-arrows-  ).

    3. 2.3. Slide cover for backrest -1-  on the outer backrest shell -2-  at the middle (-arrowrichtung-  ) and disengage it.

    4. 2.4. Unclip cover for front backrest at the side and fold cover aside slightly -arrows-  .

  3. Loosen both fastening screws on the front side airbag -arrow-  . For vehicles with 18-way adaptive sports seats, the air cushion must be pushed aside slightly to do this.

  4. Take front side airbag out of the seat backrest.
  5. Release and unplug electric plug connection -2-  by moving the locking mechanism -1-  in direction of arrow on the front side airbag -3-  . Disconnect electric plug connection (ground cable).
