Removing Rear Drive Shaft

Information 

  1. Fit protection -arrow-  for drive shaft. Release inner end of drive shaft from the transmission.

  2. Loosen the drive shaft at the wheel hub. To do this, get another mechanic to help by operating the brake.
    1. 2.1. Procedure (for loosening the drive shaft at the wheel hub) on vehicles with central bolts: 
      1. 2.1.1. Remove the lockable wheel bolt (locking mechanism).

      2. 2.1.2. Loosen/remove the hexagon nut -1-  using socket wrench 9471.

  3. Carefully press the drive shaft peg out of the wheel hub until you can move the shaft with your hand.
    1. 3.1. On vehicles without central bolts, use Universal drive shaft/wheel hub extractor as of 86 model Nr.87-1  .

    2. 3.2. On vehicles with central bolts  , screw assembly aid 9794  (hub extension) -1-  (as far as it can go) into the wheel hub. The spindle -2-  must not yet touch the drive shaft. Turn the spindle -2-  as required if necessary.

      Turn the spindle -2-  to the right. Counter at the surface -3-  with an open-ended wrench (a/f 36 mm) while doing this.

      Keep turning the spindle -2-  until the drive shaft is pressed out of the wheel hub.

      The parking-brake cable must be disengaged from the parking brake lever in the passenger compartment before the drive shaft can be removed.

      → Removing/fitting parking-brake cable  Disengaging the parking-brake cable includes:

      • Undo parking-brake lever (do not operate until after fitting! Self-adjusting!)
      • Open cover of oddments tray in center console.
      • Remove bottom of oddments tray in center console.
      • Disengage the relevant parking-brake cable to the side of the turnbuckle.
  4. Pull protective sleeve of parking-brake cable -2-  from guide tube on underbody -1-  .

  5. Detach both upper axle struts from the outside of the wheel bearing housing. → Upper axle struts detached

  6. Undo the holder for the brake hose/wear indicator -arrow-  .

  7. Loosen connecting link for anti-roll bar -1-  and spring strut -2-  on the wheel bearing housing.

  8. Carefully pull wheel bearing housing outwards. Guide the parking-brake cable and remove the drive shaft (assistance of second fitter required). → Removing drive shaft
