Adjusting Front-Axle Toe
- Before adjusting the toe, check whether the steering wheel is offset with respect to the steering gear. Reposition the steering wheel if necessary.
To do this, perform the following steps:
- 1.1. Move steering gear to center position.
- 1.2. Turn wheels to the straight-ahead position.
- 1.3. Then, adjust the front wheel alignment if necessary until the center position marking -1-
is aligned with the arrow.
- Center position marking
- Desired breaking point of retaining pin in new steering gears
If the front underbody panelling is fitted, the position of the center position marking can be checked using a mirror.
- 1.4. Reposition the steering wheel if necessary. When repositioning the steering wheel, try to find the best position.
- Clamp steering wheel in center position with steering wheel holder -A-
. Only use steering wheel holders that do not project into the area of the airbag unit -B-
. Shorten the guiding rod of the steering wheel holder at the top if necessary -arrow-
.

For fast and reliable steering wheel alignment in center position, use a -steering wheel balance- (with integrated angle measurement box).
- With the steering wheel in center position, adjust the toe at the relevant tie rod.
- 3.1. Loosen the lock nut -2-
. To do this, counter at the tie-rod ball -3-
using a suitable open-ended wrench.
Then, with the steering wheel in center position, adjust the toe at the hexagon -1- on the tie rod(s) using a suitable open-ended wrench.
Then tighten the lock nut (on the relevant tie rod) to the specified tightening torque.
- 3.2. To loosen and tighten the lock nut, use socket-wrench insert 9730 -A-
together with a torque wrench -B-
.
The tightening torque for the lock nut of 50 Nm (37 ftlb.), when using socket-wrench insert 9730 -A- , corresponds to a value of approx. 32.5 Nm (24 ftlb.) on the torque wrench.
- 3.1. Loosen the lock nut -2-
. To do this, counter at the tie-rod ball -3-
using a suitable open-ended wrench.
