Removing Rear Wheel Bearing
WARNING:
Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic press
- Risk of squashing
→ Read specific safety information for the press.
→ Check that the press is working perfectly before use, particularly the safety components.
- Wheel hub Carry out a close visual inspection of the seat of the wheel bearing. No grooving, scoring or similar deformation is permitted!

- The wheel bearing can no longer be used after it has been removed. Do not press on the inner race when installing (pressing in). Insert new wheel bearing with the magnetic multipole ring facing the inside of the wheel bearing housing (towards the speed sensor). Check the magnetic side using a test card Nr.147-2 or a paper clip. Do not use magnets or screw drivers to check!
- Wheel bearing housing Carry out a close visual inspection of the seat of the wheel bearing. No grooving, scoring or similar deformation is permitted!
- Press out wheel hub.
- 1.1. Insert the wheel bearing housing, with the wheel hub facing down, into the hydraulic press.
Use support rails VW 457 as a countering device.
Ensure that the cover of the wheel bearing with the circular areas is lying flat on the support rails and that the wheel hub can extend downwards freely.
- 1.2. Place the pressure piece VW 454 flat on the -2-
wheel hub.
Insert a large stamp -1- in the workshop press.
- 1.3. Hold the wheel hub from below to prevent it falling out (second fitter required). Slowly extend the large press stamp -1-
and place the pressure piece VW 454 -2-
on it. Carefully press out the wheel hub -3- -direction arrow-
.

- 1.1. Insert the wheel bearing housing, with the wheel hub facing down, into the hydraulic press.
- Remove the wheel bearing cover (M8 screws).
- Press out the wheel bearing.
- 3.1. Place pipe T10205/5 -2- under the workshop press and put the wheel bearing housing on top. Centre the press-on sleeve 9694/3 -1- on the wheel bearing.
- 3.2. Carefully press out the wheel bearing -direction arrow- .
- Press the wheel bearing inner race out of the wheel hub using the -1 and 2- tool

- 4.1. Position the separating device Nr.111 -2- under the wheel bearing inner race -1- and tighten evenly using open-ended wrench -4- . Take care not to damage the -3- wheel hub.
- 4.2. Using the pressure piece VW 454 -arrow- , carefully push the wheel hub through the wheel bearing inner race -1- . Hold the wheel hub from below (second fitter required).
