Removing Transmission

WARNING: Vehicle can fall down
  • Risk of squashing or crushing
  • Risk of damage to the vehicle

→ Do not place any solid objects under the raised vehicle.

→ Ensure that the lifting platform is prevented from lowering.

→ Remove solid objects before lowering the vehicle.

→ Raise the vehicle only at the jacking points provided.

→ The outer jacking points should be used primarily.

Information 

  1. Remove diagonal braces.
    1. 1.1. Unscrew screws -1-  on the mounting for the longitudinal arm.
    2. 1.2. Unscrew screws -2-  on the body.
    3. 1.3. Unscrew screws -3-  on the cross member.
    4. 1.4. Remove diagonal braces -A-  .

    Information 

    • Protect the drive shafts from mechanical damage. 
  2. Loosen drive shafts on the transmission side.
    1. 2.1. Unscrew screws -arrows-  between the drive shaft and transmission flange.

      Counter at the wheel. Get another person to help if necessary.

  3. Detach shift and selector cables on manual transmission.
    1. 3.1. Lever off ball joints -1-  on the exterior shift mechanism using disassembly tool Nr.21  .
    2. 3.2. Release shift and selector cables -3-  at the support -2-  and pull them out.

  4. Disconnect cable plug for temperature sensor on the transmission.
    1. 4.1. Pull out lock on cable plug -1-  (-arrow-  ).
    2. 4.2. Release and pull off cable plug.
    3. 4.3. Remove claw plate holder -2-  .

  5. Disconnect cable plug for reverse gear switch on the transmission.
    1. 5.1. Loosen and disconnect cable plug -1-  .
    2. 5.2. Pull off retaining clip -2-  .

  6. Disconnect cable plug for control valve and neutral gear sensor on the transmission.
    1. 6.1. Release and pull off cable plug -1-  .
    2. 6.2. Press holder -3-  together using a pliers and pull it off.
    3. 6.3. Loosen and disconnect cable plug -2-  .
    4. 6.4. Pull off sheetmetal holder -4-  .

  7. Disconnect coolant hoses.
    1. 7.1. Clamp off coolant hoses -1 and 2-  using hose clamping pliers Nr.192 -3 and 4-  .

    2. 7.2. Place a container under the vehicle to collect coolant.
    3. 7.3. Pull off coolant hoses.

      1. 7.3.1. Open spring band clamp -3-  on upper coolant hose -1-  .

        Pull off the coolant hose.

      2. 7.3.2. Open spring band clamp -4-  on lower coolant hose -2-  .

        Pull off the coolant hose.

    4. 7.4. Remove holder for coolant hoses.
      1. 7.4.1. Unscrew screw -2-  on the holder -1-  .
    5. 7.5. Leave coolant hoses hanging at the side.

  8. Remove disc valve holder.
    1. 8.1. Pull off vacuum line for disc valve -arrows-  .
    2. 8.2. Remove disc valve holder.
      1. 8.2.1. Loosen screw -1-  on the holder.

  9. Detach part of the center underbody panelling.
    1. 9.1. Unscrew the four rear screws on the underbody panelling.

      Information 

      • Do not kink underbody panelling. 
  10. Remove brace plate.
    1. 10.1. Bend the underbody panelling down as far as required -arrow-  until you have easy access to the threaded joints for the brace plate -A-  .
    2. 10.2. Unscrew screws -1-  .
    3. 10.3. Remove brace plate -A-  .

    Information 

    Make sure that the engine is positioned securely on the transmission jack. To do this, set the correct angle on the transmission jack.

  11. Support the transmission and engine.
    1. 11.1. Support the transmission.
      1. 11.1.1. Position the transmission jack -1-  under the transmission.
      2. 11.1.2. Secure the transmission with a restraining strap.
    2. 11.2. Support the engine.
      1. 11.2.1. Position transmission jack -2-  under the engine of the vehicle.

  12. Remove transmission bracket.
    1. 12.1. Remove transmission mount screw -1-  by loosening the nut -2-  .
    2. 12.2. Remove transmission bracket -A-  .
      1. 12.2.1. Unscrew screws -3-  .
      2. 12.2.2. Pull coolant pipe holder -B-  off the transmission bracket.
      3. 12.2.3. Remove transmission bracket.
    3. 12.3. Remove transmission support -C-  .
      1. 12.3.1. Screw off nuts -4-  on the threaded bolts.
      2. 12.3.2. Lower the transmission by about 35 mm in order to remove the transmission support.

  13. Remove cable duct for B+ line.
    1. 13.1. Unscrew external Torx screws -1-  .
    2. 13.2. Position the cable duct -A-  securely.

  14. Disconnect cable plug for RPM sensor -1-  on the transmission.

    Information 

    Do not  disconnect hydraulic line for clutch control. Only remove the fastening screws for the clutch slave cylinder from the transmission.

  15. Remove clutch slave cylinder.
    1. 15.1. Disconnect clutch slave cylinder from the transmission.
      1. 15.1.1. Unscrew screws -1-  .
    2. 15.2. Pull the clutch slave cylinder out of the mount. -arrow-  .

    NOTE: Mechanical overload of components
    • Component will be damaged irreparably

    → Observe guidelines for assembly and disassembly

    Information 

    Check that the guide sleeves between the transmission flange and engine flange remain in the engine flange.

  16. Remove transmission.
    1. 16.1. First unscrew the lower connecting bolts -1 and 2-  between the transmission flange and engine.
    2. 16.2. Loosen and unscrew the remaining four bolts in the following sequence: -6, 5, 4, 3-  .
    3. 16.3. Move the transmission out downwards and towards the front by lowering the transmission jack step by step.
