Installing Transmission

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: Engine housing overload.
  • Risk of engine damage if housing breaks.

→ Observe specified loosening and tightening sequence!

→ Loosening sequence: Loosen screws from the bottom up.

→ Tightening sequence: Tighten screws from top to bottom.

  1. Raise and guide in the transmission.
    1. 1.1. Only tighten fastening screws in the following sequence initially: -3, 4, 5, 6, 1, 2-  .

      For the next step, it is important that the screws are not yet tightened!

  2. Install clutch slave cylinder.
    1. 2.1. Grease the clutch slave cylinder at the lubrication point -arrows-  using Khyber Syntheso Glep.

    2. 2.2. Position the transmission 15 mm away from the engine flange.
    3. 2.3. Position the clutch slave cylinder.
    4. 2.4. Only tighten screws -1-  first.

  3. Mount transmission.
    1. 3.1. Fit screws -3, 4, 5, 6-  first, then -1 and 2-  .

  4. Secure the clutch slave cylinder.
    1. 4.1. Tighten screws -1-  on the clutch slave cylinder.

      → Tightening torque: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.) 

    2. 4.2. Check that the clutch slave cylinder is fitted correctly.

  5. Tighten all fastening screws.

    Tightening torque 85 Nm (63 ftlb.)

  6. Fit cable duct for B+ line.
    1. 6.1. Position cable duct -A-  .
    2. 6.2. Fit and tighten external Torx screws -1-  .

      Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)

  7. Fit disc valve holder and connect vacuum line.
    1. 7.1. Fit disc valve holder and screw in and tighten screw -1-  on the holder.

      Tightening torque 13 Nm (9.5 ftlb.) 

    2. 7.2. Connect vacuum line for disc valve -arrows-  .

  8. Fit coolant hoses.
    1. 8.1. Fit holder -1-  for coolant hoses using screw -2-  .

      Tightening torque 13 Nm (9.5 ftlb.)

    2. 8.2. Connect coolant hoses -1 and 2-  and close spring band clamps -3 and 4-  .

    3. 8.3. Remove hose clamping pliers -3 and 4-  .

  9. Connect cable plug for RPM sensor -1-  .

  10. Install transmission brackets.
    1. 10.1. Position transmission support -C-  and screw nuts -4-  onto the threaded bolts.

    2. 10.2. Raise the transmission.
    3. 10.3. Position transmission bracket -A-  and hold it.
    4. 10.4. Fit transmission mount screw -1-  and only tighten nut -2-  initially.
    5. 10.5. Connect coolant pipe holder -B-  to the transmission bracket.
  11. Install brace plate and transmission bracket.
    1. 11.1. Position brace plate -A-  and tighten all screws -1-  .

    2. 11.2. Fit screws -3-  on the transmission bracket.

    3. 11.3. Tighten screws in the brace plate.

      Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 ftlb.) +90 Grad 

    4. 11.4. Tighten screws -3-  in the transmission bracket.

      Tightening torque 65 Nm (48 ftlb.) 

    5. 11.5. Tighten nuts -4-  used to secure the transmission support -C-  to the body.

      Tightening torque 65 Nm (48 ftlb.) 

    6. 11.6. Screw on nut with the transmission mount screw -1-  .

      Tightening torque 120 Nm (89 ftlb.) 

  12. Remove transmission jack from under the transmission and engine.
    1. 12.1. Loosen restraining strap.
    2. 12.2. Lower and remove transmission jack -1 and 2-  .

  13. Connect cable plug for temperature sensor to the transmission.
    1. 13.1. Connect cable plug -1-  .
    2. 13.2. Push in locking element -arrow-  .
    3. 13.3. Fit sheetmetal holder -2-  .

  14. Connect cable plug for reverse gear to the transmission.
    1. 14.1. Connect cable plug -1-  .
    2. 14.2. Fit retaining clip -2-  .

  15. Connect cable plug for control valve and neutral gear sensor.
    1. 15.1. Connect cable plug -1 and 2-  .
    2. 15.2. Fit retaining clip -3-  on the cast rib.
    3. 15.3. Fit sheetmetal holder -4-  .

  16. Secure shift and selector cables -3-  to the transmission.
    1. 16.1. Fit shift and selector cables -3-  on the support -2-  .
    2. 16.2. Press ball joints -1-  onto the exterior shift mechanism.

  17. Fit drive shafts on the transmission side.
    1. 17.1. Fit and tighten screws -arrows-  between the drive shaft and transmission flange on the plates -1-  .

      Counter at the wheel. Get another person to help if necessary! 

      Tightening torque 90 Nm

  18. Install diagonal braces.
    1. 18.1. Position diagonal braces -A-  .
    2. 18.2. Fit and tighten screws -1-  on the mounting for the longitudinal arm.

      Tightening torque 65 Nm (48 ftlb.) 

    3. 18.3. Fit and tighten screws -2-  on the body.

      Initial tightening 90 Nm (67 ftlb.) Final tightening +90° 

      On the Cabriolet:  Diagonal brace on outer body

      Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 ftlb.) 

    4. 18.4. Fit and tighten screws -3-  on the rear-axle cross member.

      Initial tightening 30 Nm (22 ftlb.) Final tightening +90°

  19. Fit center underbody panelling.
    1. 19.1. Bend up underbody panelling.
    2. 19.2. Screw in and tighten the four rear screws on the underbody panelling.
