Checking ATF

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2005 Porsche 911, 2004 Porsche 911, 2003 Porsche 911, 2002 Porsche 911, and 2001 Porsche 911. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
  • Top up only with ATF approved by Porsche. See APPROVED TRANSMISSION OILS TRANSMISSION .
  • The stipulated fluid level is extremely important for perfect functioning of the automatic transmission. It is correct if there is a slight amount of ATF escaping at the filler screw bore -2- at temperatures between 30°C and 40°C.

Testing conditions:

  1. Attach the filled ATF container (special tool filling system V.A.G 1924) as high up on the vehicle as possible.
  2. Place oil collection pan under the transmission.
  3. Connect the Porsche System Tester 2 and call up the ATF temperature.
NOTE: The ATF temperature must not be higher than 40°C at the start of the test.
  4. Move selector lever to position "P" and allow engine to idle.
WARNING: Danger of injury from emerging ATF fluid!
ATF fluid can cause burns and chemical burns to the eyes!
    • Wear protective goggles
  5. Unscrew filler screw -2-  . If ATF escapes from the filler screw hole and if the ATF temperature is 30 °C to 40 °C, the ATF level is in order.

  6. If no ATF escapes from the control bore even though approx. 40 °C has been reached, the ATF must be topped up. To do this, top ATF up with special tool filler system V.A.G 1924 until ATF escapes at the bore of the filler screw.
    NOTE:
    • The filler hook must be carefully inserted into one of the openings of the ATF guard cap -4- positioned on the filler hole. When doing so, do not push the filler hook upwards as the oil guard cap can spring off upwards.
    • The filler screw must be closed no later than when an ATF temperature of 45 °C is reached.
  7. Screw in ATF filler screw with a new sealing ring.
