Removing sealing ring for short flanged shaft

NOTE: The short flanged shaft can be removed only by partially undoing the wheel suspension.
  1. Remove right rear wheel.
  2. Uncouple drive shaft on the transmission side.
    CAUTION: Protect drive shaft and shaft flange from damage.
  3. Remove spacer ring
  4. Undo right stabilizer mount.

    NOTE: Counter with an open-ended wrench when removing from the stabilizer fastening.
  5. Undo the outer ends of both upper arms and remove the screws.

  6. Unscrew fastening screw for flanged shaft (Fig 3 shows removed transmission).

  7. Press wheel carrier downwards and pull out flanged shaft.
  8. Remove sealing ring with special tools VW 771/1 and VW 771/37 (Fig 4 shows removed transmission).
