Information

Specifications for wrench sizes (a/f specifications) for screw heads are described as follows:

Information

  1. Check camshaft position.
    1. 1.1. The cams on cylinders 1 and 4 must be positioned as follows:
    2. 1.2. Ignition TDC of cylinder 1: cams on the outlet and intake camshaft of cylinder 1 are facing outward at a slant.

    Information

    • Tighten the screws for the adjustment device only slightly. It must be possible to move the frame easily by hand.
  2. Fit plates of the Adjustment Device 9661  to the camshaft housing sealing face on both cylinder banks using two M6 x 25 screws on each plate.
    1. 2.1. Screw in the screws -arrows-  by hand.

  3. Insert the retainer springs 9661/5  into the frame according to the markings and secure them using two locating screws on each spring.

Only insert the retainer springs as far as required so that the camshafts can still turn!

    Information

    • When loosening or tightening the camshaft actuators, a second person must counter with the relevant retaining tool.
    • The camshafts are set with the standard chain tensioners.
  4. Set the camshafts.
    1. 4.1. Turn the camshafts at the hexagon as required using an open-ended wrench (a/f 30) -1-  until the retainer springs -3-  slide easily into the slots on the camshafts.

    2. 4.2. The dowel pins -3-  on the retainer springs -2-  must also fit into the relevant additional slots on the camshafts -arrows-  .

    3. 4.3. Secure the retainer springs using the hexagon-head bolts.
  5. Fit dial gauge in order to determine the top piston position correctly.
    1. 5.1. Secure a dial gauge on cylinder 1 using a universal dial gauge holder.
    2. 5.2. If necessary, extend the probe of the dial gauge until you can definitely take measurements on the piston crown.

  6. To set the timing, the piston for cylinder 1 must be positioned exactly at TD  C.
    1. 6.1. To do this, turn the crankshaft clockwise from the 60° position ahead of TDC using the pulley until the maximum defection (reversing point) is attained on the dial gauge.
    2. 6.2. At the same time, the second TDC marking -2-  must be aligned with the joint on the crankcase -arrow-  at the crankshaft pulley.

  7. Pre-tighten central screws on the camshaft actuators. Counter at the hexagon of the relevant camshaft using a long open-ended wrench (a/f 30).
    1. 7.1. Initial tightening of camshaft actuator on intake side:  hexagon-head bolt, M12
      1. Plate 9661 with retainer springs 9661/5
      2. Open-ended/ring wrench, a/f 30

→ Initial tightening: 50 Nm (37 ft. lb.)

  8. The retainer springs 9661/5  must always be pulled out of the camshaft slots during the final tightening procedure.
  9. Tighten central screws (M12 x 130) on the camshaft actuators using a torque angle wrench -1-  . Counter with the prescribed tools.
    1. 9.1. Final tightening of camshaft actuator on intake side:

      Hexagon-head bolt, counter with a long ring wrench (a/f 30) -2-  .

    2. 10.2. Retainer springs 9661/5  must be positioned in the adjustment device and pushed into the camshaft slots.
    3. 10.3. If set correctly, the retainer springs and dowel pins will slide easily into the camshaft slots.
    4. 10.4. If the retainer springs do not fit, the adjustment procedure must be repeated.
    5. 10.5. Remove tools.
  11. Cylinder bank 1-3 only:  Install driver for vacuum pump using special tool dowel sleeve 9826 -1-  .
