Removing Power-Steering Gear - Four-Wheel Drive

Information 

Fix the steering wheel with the wheels in straight-ahead position or remove the steering wheel with the wheels in straight-ahead position. If this is not done, the airbag contact unit will have to be moved to center position after installation of the steering gear.

  1. Loosen universal joint (steering shaft) at the steering gear -arrow-  . To do this, take out the clamping screw and slide the joint upwards.

  2. Press tie-rod end out of the steering arm. Press-out tool 9560  (ball-joint extractor) must be used to do this. When loosening the lock nut, counter with a screwdriver 9546  (Torx screwdriver).

    On the 911 Turbo, remove the spoiler at the diagonal arm (air guide for the brake cooling system).

  3. Repeat the procedure on the other side.
  4. Loosen feed and return lines at the steering gear. To do this, loosen the hexagon socket head bolt -arrow-  and remove the retainer plate. Close off lines or use a collecting container. Cover lines if necessary (danger of soiling).

  5. Remove diagonal braces and crash stop -arrows-  .

  6. Remove longitudinal restraining straps (two M8 screws) -arrows-  and take off cover on fuel tank.

  7. Loosen bracket on final drive -A-  at the front-axle carrier.
    1. 7.1. Lower the vehicle to working height (lower lifting platform) and support the final drive - at the rear - using a hydraulic lift (use a hard rubber base or wooden block).
    2. 7.2. Loosen fastening nuts -B-  for front carrier -A-  and unscrew the studs -C-  . Repeat the procedure on the other side.

  8. Loosen the steering gear (two screws -1-  ). Then lower the front-axle cross member slightly at the front (approx. 50 to 60 mm). To lower the cross member, complete the following steps:

    1. 8.1. Loosen mount for coolant pipes on the front-axle cross member -6, 7 and 8-  (two supports on each side of the mount with M6 screws and a plastic clip at the front in the middle of the cross member).
    2. 8.2. Support the front-axle cross member - in the center - with a hydraulic lift (use a hard rubber base or wooden block).
    3. 8.3. Loosen threaded connections securing cross member to body (front) -2-  and cross member and diagonal arm to the body -3-  .
    4. 8.4. Loosen threaded connections securing cross member to body (rear) -4-  .
    5. 8.5. Unscrew screws -5-  by approx. 10 mm.
    6. 8.6. Lower the front cross member slightly (approx. 50 to 60 mm).
  9. Pull out steering gear to the left (to the right for right-hand drive vehicles).

    Information 

    Ensure that no damage (scoring) is caused to the steering rack. To loosen and tighten the track rods, secure the steering gear on a suitable plate.

  10. Loosen and remove the right and left tie rods at the steering gear if necessary.
