Measuring And Adjusting The Output Shaft (Total Shim Thickness S4 And S5)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2013 Porsche 911, 2012 Porsche 911, 2011 Porsche 911, 2010 Porsche 911, and 2009 Porsche 911. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Information
- The drive shaft does not need to be disassembled for this adjustment step.
- Get ready to take measurements.
- 1.1. Fit adjusting shim S3 -A- with a thickness of 1 mm.
- 1.2. Fit tensioning plate with drive shaft.
→ tightening torque: 25 Nm (19 ft. lb.)
- Take the measurement.
- 2.1. Measure amount of play on the four-point bearing. To do this, fit the dial gauge using special tool Dial Gauge Holder VW 387
. Press the outer bearing ring forward fully and set the dial gauge to 0.
Information
- The measured play plus the specified bearing pretension of 0 to 0.07 mm indicate the thickness of shim S4.
- 2.2. Press outer bearing ring back fully and read off the amount of play on the dial gauge.
Example: 1.00 mm
Example: 1.00 mm + 0.05 mm = 1.05 mm = S4
Example: S4 = S5 = 1.05 mm
- 2.1. Measure amount of play on the four-point bearing. To do this, fit the dial gauge using special tool Dial Gauge Holder VW 387

- Make adjustments.
- 3.1. Guide output shaft -A-
with adjusting shim S5 -B-
and adjusting shim
S4 -C- into the tensioning plate -E- .
- 3.2. Detach fixed gear wheel for 4th gear -D- on the output shaft. The large collar is facing the tensioning plate.
- 3.3. Insert the preselected adjusting shim S3 into the transmission housing and fit the tensioning plates with the shafts.
