Removing Crankshaft Sealing Ring
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2013 Porsche 911, 2012 Porsche 911, 2011 Porsche 911, 2010 Porsche 911, and 2009 Porsche 911. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
Ingress of dirt
- Danger of material damage due to blocked oil bores/oil ducts.
→ Absolute cleanliness is essential when working on the engine.
→ Lay removed engine parts on a clean base and make sure to cover them.
→ Use the cover for dust protection when fitting the engine NR.165 on the engine assembly support.
Information
A 1.7-mm thick aluminum support ring is also fitted ex-works as of engine numbers M97.76 618 24165 - GT3 and M97.76 618 29011 - GT3 RS .
- The support ring is fitted behind the crankshaft sealing ring.
- The support ring must always be replaced.
- For more information, see: Technical Information 3/08, spacer ring for crankshaft sealing ring.
NOTE:
Drilling work on crankshaft sealing ring
- Risk of engine damage caused by drilling chips
- Risk of damage to the crankcase
- Do not apply pressure while drilling
→ Carefully remove drill chips
→ Drill carefully
- Drill two holes (dia. 2.5 mm) in the center of the metal ring of the crankshaft sealing ring -arrows-
.
CAUTION: Use of lever tools.
- Risk of damage to the sealing surface of the crankcase.
→ The sealing ring must never be levered out.
→ Always comply with the specified procedure.
- Screw the threaded tip of the tool impact puller 168 - 1 alternately
into the bore holes -arrows-
and pull the metal ring out evenly.
- 2.1. After pulling out the metal ring, the actual sealing ring remains in the crankcase. This must never be levered out under any circumstances.
- Carefully remove drilling chips.NOTE: Drilling work on crankshaft sealing ring
- Risk of engine damage caused by drilling chips
- Risk of damage to the crankcase
- Do not apply pressure while drilling
→ Carefully remove drill chips
→ Drill carefully
- Drill another two holes -arrows-
using a 2.0-mm drill bit. Drill carefully and as far into the corners (metal body) of the sealing ring as possible.
- 4.1. There is a gap of about two millimeters between the rear edge of the sealing ring and the crankcase wall. A support ring is fitted in this space with the introduction of the specified engine numbers. The purpose of this support ring is to keep the crankshaft sealing ring straight. Drilling through the sealing ring can therefore create aluminum chips.
- 4.2. Carefully remove any drilling chips.
- Pull off the sealing ring. There are two ways of doing this - both are described below.
- 5.1. Screw the threaded tip of the tool impact puller Nr.168 alternately into the bore holes -arrows- and pull the sealing ring out evenly.
- 5.2. Screw in two tapping screws -arrows- and pull the sealing ring out evenly using the claw sleeve from the slide hammer kit Nr.168 -1- .
- Remove the aluminum support ring (if it is already fitted) -1- . This must be replaced.
- Carefully remove chips and oil residue at the crankshaft bore hole.
- 7.1. Carefully inspect sealing faces for signs of damage.
