Removing Windshield

WARNING: Vehicle windows removed and installed incorrectly
  • Danger of cuts
  • Risk of eye injuries

→ Wear personal protective gear.

→ Always shut off power supply when replacing cutting knife.

  1. Unplug windshield antennas at both sides of the vehicle -arrows-  .

  2. Disconnect plug connections on the A-pillar at the left and right -arrows-  .

  3. Affix all connectors securely to the windshield using adhesive tape -1-  .

    Information 

    • The fastening force can be increased by moistening the fastening intake. 
  4. Attach the outer suction cups Suction Cups - Stahlwille WE 1140  to the windshield.
  5. Unwind the cutting wire and cut using side cutters. → Length: 6 m 

    Information 

    • The cutting thread must be positioned under the rim. 
  6. Guide the cutting wire into the gap in the glass Cutting Tool For Bonded Windows - VAS 6452 WE 1480  .
    1. 6.1. Wet the windshield seal -1-  all the way around with soapy water.
    2. 6.2. Pull the cutting wire -2-  all the way through the gap between the windshield and body -arrows-  .
    3. 6.3. Attach the free end of the cutting wire to the wiper linkage.

  7. Guide the cutting wire inward.
    1. 7.1. Use the scratch awl -1-  to apply a bead of adhesive from the inside out -arrow A-  .
    2. 7.2. Thread the cutting wire -2-  into the scratch awl and insert it into the passenger compartment -arrow B-  .
    3. 7.3. Pull the cutting wire into the passenger compartment. → Length: 1 m

      Information 

      • Make sure not to damage the electric connections when removing the glass with the cutting wire. 
      • Cut up to just before the connection. 
      • Slacken the cutting wire. 
      • Guide the cutting wire past the connection on the inside.

      • Counter with an awl.

      • Make sure that the cutting wire does not press against the electric connection when separating the glass. 
      • Continue separating the window glass. 

      Information 

      • In order to guarantee optimum suction cup grip, it is advisable to clean the inside of the glass before removal. 
  8. Separate the windshield.
    1. 8.1. Insert the cutting wire -1-  into the bore on the spooling device -2-  .
    2. 8.2. Position the spooling device -2-  in the center of the glass and press the fastening intakes firmly against the windshield -3-  .
    3. 8.3. Secure the fastening intakes to the windshield using the actuating levers.

      Information 

      • To prevent damage, slide the protective film -2- supplied with the cutting tool between the windshield and vehicle identification number -1-. 
      • Guide the cutting wire -3- over the protective film when separating the glass. -arrow-

    4. 8.4. Remove the windshield by winding the cutting wire onto the spooling device in -direction of arrow-  .

      Reposition the spooling device to reduce the tensile force of the cutting wire when removing the glass.

  9. Remove the windshield.
