Removing Wheel Bearing Housing (Wheel Carrier)
Information
- Remove the two wire retainers on the wheel bearing housing (M6 screw). Disconnect speed sensor plug.
- Push protection over input shaft.
- Drive shafts must not be left hanging from the joint stop.
Information
Secure upper trailing arm with the spring compressor VW 552 (pre-tension slightly). This must be done immediately before loosening the spring strut from the lower trailing arm. This prevents damage to the ball joint on the upper trailing arm as a result of the weight of the wheel bearing housing.
- Secure spring compressor VW 552 at the top. → Securing spring compressor on front axle, top

Information
- To gain better access for assembly work, it is a good idea to turn the wheels fully either to the right or left!
- Disconnect plug-in coupling for brake pad wear indicator -1- and detach it from the holder -2- .
- Detach holder for brake line and wear indicator at the wheel carrier -arrow- .
- Disconnect connector for speed sensor. → Speed sensor connector
- Remove brake calliper and hang it in the wheel housing.
- 4.1. Loosen fastening screws -arrows- on the brake calliper, but do not remove the brake line. (Do not open the brake system!)
- 4.2. Hang the brake calliper at a suitable position in the wheel housing.
- Loosen fastening screws -arrows- and remove brake disc.
- If the wheel bearing housing is replaced (all-wheel drive vehicles only):
Use puller set Nr.87-1 Pos.1 to move (press) the drive shaft peg max. → Control value: +10 mm into the wheel hub. → Pressing in drive shaft Leave the puller fitted (this will make removal easier!).
- Remove air guide -1- on the lower trailing arm.
- For all-wheel drive vehicles: Loosen drive shaft at the transmission side.
- 8.1. Use a protective tube (shop made) -1- for the drive shaft.
- 8.2. Loosen fastening screws -arrows-
using socket insert XZN 10 T10501
.

WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly- Risk of squashing
- Risk of damage to components
→ Wear personal protective gear.
→ Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
- Remove fastening screw on lower spring strut.
- 9.1. Remove fastening screw on lower spring strut -arrows- .
- 9.2. To do this, use a suitable lift -lift with rubber base- (to prevent slipping) to raise the wheel carrier so that the screw can be unscrewed easily. (Secure spring compressor VW 552 to prevent it from falling down!).
- Press tie-rod ball -1-
off the wheel bearing housing.
- 10.1. Loosen fastening nut -3- (do not remove completely). When doing this, leave lock nut flush on the ball pin so as not to damage thread.
- 10.2. Ball joint puller T10187 -2- must be positioned over the tie-rod ball -1- and fitted on the fastening nut -3- .
- 10.3. Screw in hexagon on the ball joint puller T10187 until the tie-rod ball -1- becomes detached from the cone.
- 10.4. Remove fastening nut -3- and take tie-rod ball out of the cone.
- Press lower trailing arm off the wheel bearing housing.
- 11.1. Loosen fastening nut (do not remove completely). When doing this, leave lock nut flush on the ball pin so as not to damage thread.
- 11.2. Ball joint puller T10187 -2- must be positioned over the ball joint and fitted on the fastening nut.
- 11.3. Screw in hexagon on the ball joint puller T10187 until the ball joint -1- becomes detached from the cone.
- Press upper trailing arm -1-
off the wheel bearing housing.
- 12.1. Secure the wheel bearing housing to prevent it from falling down (second mechanic required).
- 12.2. Loosen fastening nut -1- (do not remove completely). When doing this, leave lock nut flush on the ball pin so as not to damage thread.
- 12.3. Ball joint puller T40010 must be positioned over the ball joint and fitted on the fastening nut.
- 12.4. Screw in hexagon on the ball joint puller T40010 until the ball joint becomes detached from the cone.
- Secure the wheel bearing housing to prevent it from falling down with the help of a second mechanic.IMPORTANT: Always hold the drive shaft!
In the event of unfavorable tolerances, it is possible that the drive shaft will slip out.
- Unscrew fastening nut completely from the lower ball joint and carefully remove wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft.
