General Equipment

WARNING:
  • Failure to support the engine and transmission may cause personal injury.
  • Be prepared to collect escaping fuel.
  • Be prepared to collect escaping coolant.
  • Be prepared to collect escaping oil.
CAUTION: Before disconnecting any components, make sure the area is clean and free from foreign material. When disconnected all components must be sealed.
NOTE:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
  • This procedure can be completed without the removal of the Air Conditioning (A/C) refrigerant.
  1. Always follow the fuel system health and safety precautions, when preforming any repairs to the fuel system. Refer to: PETROL AND PETROL-ETHANOL FUEL SYSTEMS HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
  2. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable. Refer to: SPECIFICATIONS .

  3. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift. Refer to: JACKING AND LIFTING .
  4. Remove the engine cover. Refer to: ENGINE COVER .
  5. Remove the air filter housing. Refer to: AIR CLEANER .
  6. Remove the startup battery tray. Refer to: BATTERY TRAY .
  7. Remove the right side headlamp. Refer to: HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY .
  8. Partially drain the cooling system. Refer to: COOLING SYSTEM PARTIAL DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
  9. Remove the front subframe. Refer to: FRONT SUBFRAME .
  10. Drain the transmission. Refer to: TRANSMISSION FLUID DRAIN AND REFILL .

    • Remove and discard the front left halfshaft nut.
    • Retain the nut for installation.
    • Repeat this step for the right side.

    • Using the special tool, release the front left halfshaft from the wheel knuckle. Special Tool(s): 205-857
    • Repeat this step for the right side.

    Using a suitable tool, remove the front left halfshaft.

    Using a suitable tool, remove the front left halfshaft circlip.

    • Remove and discard the 2 front right halfshaft support bearing nuts.
    • Remove the halfshaft support bearing bracket.

    Using a suitable tool, remove the front right halfshaft.

    • Release the accessory drive belt tensioner.
    • Install a suitable tool to lock the accessory drive belt tensioner in the removal position.
    • Remove the accessory drive belt.

    • Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.
    • Release the 2 wiring harness clips.
  19. CAUTION: Make sure the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor is correctly supported.

    Remove the 3 bolts and position the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor away from the engine assembly.

    Release the exhaust clamp.

    Remove and discard the 3 exhaust nuts.

    • Release the exhaust joint.
    • Remove the exhaust intermediate pipe.
    • Remove and discard the clamp.
  23. NOTE: If equipped.

    Remove and discard the exhaust gasket.

    Remove and discard the clamp.

  25. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the joint, do not allow the driveshaft to hang.

    Remove and discard the 6 bolts and position the driveshaft away from the engine assembly.

    • Release the 2 active driveline unions.
    • Remove the bolt and position the active driveline pipes away from the engine assembly.

    • Disconnect the coolant hose from the transmission cooler.
    • Release the coolant hose clip.
    • Remove and discard the clamp.

    Disconnect the coolant hose from the charge air cooler.

    Disconnect the 3 coolant hoses.

    Disconnect the vacuum pipe.

    Disconnect the 2 coolant hoses from the radiator.

    Remove the bolt and position the windshield washer filler neck to allow access to the coolant pipes.

    Disconnect the coolant hose from the radiator.

    Disconnect the coolant hose from the coolant housing.

    Disconnect the electrical connector and release the clip.

    • Disconnect the coolant hose from the coolant expansion tank.
    • Disconnect the degas pipe and release the clip.

    • Remove the 3 bolts.
    • Disconnect the 2 coolant hoses from the auxiliary radiator.
    • Remove the auxiliary radiator assembly.

    Disconnect the breather pipe.

  39. WARNING: This step involves fuel handling. Be prepared for fuel spillage at all times and always observe fuel handling precautions. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

    Disconnect the fuel pipe.

    Disconnect the 3 Powertrain Control Module (PCM) electrical connectors.

    • Release the 2 wiring harness clips.
    • Release the wiring harness mounting rubber.
    • Position the wiring harness away from the bulkhead area.

    • Remove the nut and disconnect the positive cable.
    • Remove the bolt and disconnect the ground cable.

    Remove the 3 bolts.

    • Disconnect the 2 engine compartment wiring harness electrical connectors.
    • Position the harness away from the left side wheel arch.

    Using a workbench, support the engine and transmission assembly.

    Remove the 4 bolts.

    • Remove and discard the 4 nuts.
    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Remove the air filter housing bracket.

    Remove and discard the 2 bolts and remove the left side engine mount.

  49. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    Support the engine and transmission assembly, and carefully raise the vehicle.

    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    2. Disconnect the breather pipe.
    3. Disconnect the 2 pipe connectors and remove the charge air outlet pipe.

    Disconnect the coolant hose and remove from the transmission cooler.

    • Disconnect the coolant pipe.
    • Disconnect the charge air cooler intake hose.
    • Remove the 4 bolts and remove the charge air cooler.

    • Disconnect the 2 coolant hoses.
    • Release the coolant hose from the clip.
    • Remove the coolant hose assembly.

    • Disconnect the coolant hose.
    • Release the coolant hose from the clip and remove the coolant hose.

    • Release the degas pipe from the clip.
    • Disconnect the degas pipe connector and remove the degas pipe.

    Release the connector and remove the coolant hose assembly.

    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    2. Disconnect the breather hose.
    3. Remove the bolt.
    4. Remove the bolt.
    5. Disconnect the charge air pipe connector and remove the charge air pipe assembly.

    • Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors.
    • Release the 2 wiring harnesses from the 2 clips.

    Remove the 3 bolts and the heatshield.

    Remove the 4 bolts and the bracket.

    Release the exhaust clamp.

    Remove the 2 bolts.

    • Remove the catalytic converter assembly.
    • Remove and discard the exhaust clamp.

    Using a workbench, support the engine and transmission assembly.

    Remove the 8 bolts and remove the halfshaft support bracket.

    Remove the 4 bolts.

    Remove the 2 bolts and remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU).

    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
    • Remove the bolt.

    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
    • Remove the 2 bolts.
    • Release the wiring harness clip.
    • Position the harness away from the transmission.

    • Disconnect the breather hose.
    • Release the wiring harness clip.
    • Remove the 2 nuts and position the wiring harness away from the starter motor.

    Remove the 2 bolts and remove the starter motor.

  72. CAUTION: Only rotate the crankshaft pulley in a clockwise direction.

    Remove and discard the 6 drive plate bolts.

    Remove the 4 upper transmission bolts.

    Remove the 2 lower transmission bolts.

    Remove the transmission bolt.

  76. WARNING: Remove the transmission bolt.
    NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

    Remove the transmission assembly.

    Install the special tool to the position illustrated. Install and tighten the 4 bolts.

    Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1673 Torque: 40 Nm

    Install the engine assembly onto a suitable engine stand. General Equipment: Engine stand
