Remove Engine

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2013 Porsche 911, 2012 Porsche 911, 2011 Porsche 911, 2010 Porsche 911, and 2009 Porsche 911. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Hot components 
  • Risk of burns

→ Let hot components cool down.

→ Wear personal protective gear.

NOTE: Engine/transmission unit lowered or inserted incorrectly 
  • Risk of damage to engine/transmission unit
  • Cables and coolant hoses can be stretched and torn

→ Gradually lower or raise the engine using a jack.

→ Always check that all necessary cables were disconnected when lowering the engine/transmission unit.

→ Make sure that no cables or hoses are damaged when fitting the engine/transmission unit.

Get one or two more persons to help.

Information 

  1. Remove air cleaner housing completely → Removing air cleaner housing.
  2. Open cap on coolant expansion tank -1- and fold up bleeder valve -2- .

    CAUTION: Caustic fluids 
    • Danger of chemical burns

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Ensure that there is good ventilation.Wear personal protective gear.

    → Avoid contact with caustic fluid.

    → If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.Ensure that there is good ventilation.Wear personal protective gear.

  3. Drain coolant. → 193817 DRAINING AND FILLING COOLANT
    1. Open coolant drain plug and re-fit with a new sealing ring.
    2. Open coolant supply hose (Henn coupling) to engine at the underbody and reconnect it.
    3. Heating supply and return hoses (open spring band clamps in direction of radiator)

  4. Open line connections in left of engine compartment.
    1. 4.1. Disconnect vacuum lines for the brake booster -1- . Pull off the plastic protection on the line for the tandem pump, press the holder forward and pull off the line. Re-fit the plastic protection immediately.
    2. 4.2. Disconnect tank vent line -2- . To do this, press the lugs of the quick connector and pull off the line. Close off the opening with a clean cloth or stopper. Refit safety clip immediately.
    3. 4.3. Disconnect breather hose from coolant expansion tank -3- . Check O-ring and replace it if necessary.

    Information 

    • The spring band clamp is vulcanised on the coolant supply hose from the coolant expansion tank to the engine!Following removal, place the air conditioning compressor on a suitable protective support (e.g. foam, neoprene). 
    • The vulcanisation becomes detached after the clamp has been opened and tightened several times. Therefore do not pull it off as this could damage the hose. 
  5. Open the pressure and return lines -1-  for hydraulic steering in the engine compartment.

  6. Pull off hose on coolant pipe under the coolant expansion tank -1- . To do this, lift the safety clip on the Henn coupling out of the lock -arrow- using a screwdriver and pull out the hose. Close off the opening using a clean cloth. Re-fit the safety clip after removing the engine.

  7. Pull off tandem pump feeder line -1- and right coolant pipe feeder hose -3- . Open spring band clamp on the vacuum line and pull off the line. Then, lift the safety clip on the Henn coupling out of the lock -2- and pull off coolant hose. Close off the opening using a clean cloth. Re-fit the safety clip after removing the engine.

  8. On Tiptronic vehicles, pull the coolant hose for the disc valve off the transmission. Clamp off hose -arrow- , open the spring band clamp and pull off the hose. Collect escaping coolant and close off hose and disc valve using stoppers.

  9. Before opening the fuel lines, put up or attach to vehicle a warning sign in a clearly visible position

    CAUTION: Highly inflammable or explosive materials 
    • Danger of fire or explosion

    → Avoid contact with hot parts or sources of ignition.

    → Use suction to remove ignitable vapours.Wear personal protective gear.

    → Attach warning sign in a clearly visible position.Use suction to remove ignitable vapours.Wear personal protective gear.

  10. Open fuel supply line. Press the lugs on the quick connector and pull off the line. Soak up emerging fuel with a cloth.

  11. Unclip fuel line from holder on coolant expansion tank -arrow- .

  12. Unclip oxygen sensor plug connections -1,2- from the holders on the right and left in the engine compartment. Push the red locking lugs upwards using a small screwdriver and disconnect the connectors. The connectors are colour-coded to avoid confusion.

  13. Loosen drive belt. Mark the rolling direction of the belt with a coloured pen. Slacken the belt by turning the tensioning roller (a/f 24) clockwise -arrow- , hold securely and take the drive belt off the deflection roller at the same time. Carefully allow the tensioning roller to return to tensioning position.

    Information 

    • The air-conditioning lines on the compressor do not need to be disconnected in order to remove the engine/transmission unit. 
    • Following removal, place the air conditioning compressor on a suitable protective support (e.g. foam, neoprene). 
  14. Remove air-conditioning compressor.

    → WM 873419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR-CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR .

  15. Disconnect the ground plug connection from the intake-air distributor, side 4-6 -arrow- .

  16. Pull the engine compartment temperature sensor together with the rubber sleeve out of intake-air distributor 4-6 -1- and loosen the rear fastening screws -2- on the air-conditioning compressor.

  17. Unscrew the front fastening screw -arrow- on the air-conditioning compressor. Due to the restricted accessibility, we recommend that you use the extension, 3/8" with a long Torx E10 socket-wrench insert. To lift out the air-conditioning compressor, the screw must be pulled upwards and held in position.

  18. Remove the holder for the servo lines, lift out the air-conditioning compressor with connected lines and place on its side on a protective support. Also secure it with a tie-wrap.
  19. Disconnect engine wire harness (2 round connectors with bayonet locks) from the plug connections in the right of the engine compartment. To do this, open the bayonet locks by turning them anti-clockwise.Remove rear cross member.

  20. Cut tie-wrap -arrow- on the engine wiring harness cable guide and lay wiring harness on the engine.

    CAUTION: Danger of injury and material damage when using Pentosin.Hot components 
    • Risk of skin irritation and damage to skin.
    • Damage to hoses and wiring.

    → Wear protective gloves and goggles.

    → In the event of contact (eyes or skin), wash immediately with water.

    → Collect emerging Pentosin.

    → Use caps to protect the wiring against soiling and damage.

    → Clean hoses and wiring immediately.

  21. Open power steering pressure pipe and return line. Loosen screws on the pressure line (counter) -1- . Loosen the spring band clamp on the return line (hose).

  22. Pull off return hose and open pressure pipe. Collect escaping Pentosin in a small container and then close off the return line.

    Information 

    • If the holder on the servo line's plug-in coupling needs to be replaced, the special tool assembly aid is already contained in the parts set. 
  23. Loosen pipe nipple on pressure line -A- from the line. Tilt the holder on one side -arrow C- and pull at the same time to disengage it. Detach pipe nipple from the line and remove the old O-ring. Close off the line.

  24. Insert holder -C- into the threaded part -A- and, if necessary, secure it using assembly aid . Screw threaded part with new O-ring into the screw coupling -B- and tighten to Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 ftlb.) . Always counter while tightening.

  25. Tie up oil filler neck with welding wire, string or a tie-wrap.

  26. Release drive shafts from transmission (a second person should actuate the brake pedal to hold it). Slide suitable protection (e.g. an open plastic pipe, an old coolant hose with a diameter of about 30 mm) over the shaft in the rear axle area or place foam padding underneath it.

  27. On Tiptronic vehicles, an aluminium spacer ring is installed between the drive shaft and transmission flange. Remove these rings.

  28. Disconnect ground strap between the engine and body at the underbody. Unscrew one M8 hexagon nut -arrow- and remove ground strap from the threaded bolt.

  29. Remove rear anti-roll bar. Unscrew two M8 x 40 hexagon-head bolts -1- at the left and right. Loosen one M10 hexagon nut on the connecting link and counter at the internal Torx of the connecting link -2- . Remove anti-roll bar.

  30. Remove the front transverse strut, both diagonal braces and the rear cross member.
    1. 30.1. Front transverse strut -A- : unscrew two M10 x 40 hexagon-head bolts.
    2. 30.2. Diagonal braces -B- : unscrew two hexagon-head bolts (M12 x 30) on the rear cross member, two hexagon-head bolts (M10 x 40) at the front and two M10 hexagon nuts on the rubber mountings.
    3. 30.3. Rear cross member, lower mounting -C- : unscrew two M12 hexagon nuts, counter at the hexagon-head bolts (M12 x 80) and pull both bolts out of the bores.

  31. Rear cross member, top mounting: loosen (do not remove) two M12 hexagon nuts (long slots on cross member) and remove cross member by pulling it downwards.

  32. Open B-plus box on the transmission -arrow- , unscrew hexagon nut and remove the cables.

  33. Manual transmission: Unclip B-plus line from transmission bracket -1- and pull through in direction of travel.

  34. Tiptronic transmission: Remove selector cable. Lever off selector cable end piece -1- at the ball joint of the selector lever -arrow- using a screwdriver.

  35. Unclip cable plug for Tiptronic transmission and then disconnect plug connection.

  36. Manual transmission: Disengage shift cables at the support brackets. Lever off the end pieces from the ball heads of the external shift mechanism. Press safety clips together and pull the cable sleeves out of the support bracket.

  37. Manual transmission: Disconnect cable plug for reverse gear switch and unclip from cable guide.

  38. Remove hall sender on cylinder bank 4-6. Unscrew one M6 hexagon socket head bolt (micro-encapsulated) -1- , pull hall sender -2- out of the bore and suspend it at one side

  39. Fit special tool retainer plate on the engine.
  40. Screw special tool support plate to retainer plate in position -9592- using four M8 x 20 hexagon-head bolts.
    1. Screw special tool mounting peg to the support plate -996- at the marked position using four M8 x 25 hexagon-head bolts.

  41. Tiptronic vehicles: Support plate must be fitted on support plate using three fastening screws.
  42. Manual transmission: To support the manual transmission, fit a length of wood (approx. 6.5 cm) -2- on the support plate -1- using a wooden screw/bolt.

  45. Use four bolts and nuts -2- to secure mounting plate for sports cars to the Master Gear unit elevating platform . To counter the tilt of the engine in the vehicle, the plate must be raised by 6 mm on one side in the opposite direction to the direction of travel. This can be achieved using two sheet steel panels -1- or thick washers on the rear bolts, for example.

  46. Remove transmission bracket. Unscrew four M10 hexagon nuts and two M10 x 55 hexagon-head bolts and remove transmission support.

  47. Loosen threaded joint for the transmission bracket. Loosen M10 collar nuts on the transmission bracket (do not unscrew completely!)
  48. Master Gear unit elevating platform must be positioned under the vehicle. Then fit the take-up bore of the mounting peg -1- with slight preload.

  49. Unscrew M10 hexagon collar nuts from the transmission bracket.
  50. Loosen and unscrew M12 hexagon collar nuts on the engine carrier (a/f 18).
  51. Slowly lower the engine/transmission unit approximately halfway using the Master Gear unit elevating platform  .
  52. Remove cable holder and sheetmetal holder for the pulse sender plug connection. Unscrew one M6 x 12 hexagon-head bolt, unclip cable from the cable holder and unscrew it. Move plug connection with cable aside.

  53. Manual transmission: Remove clutch slave cylinder → 303019 Removing and installing clutch slave cylinder - section on "Removing". Unclip line -2- , unscrew two fastening screws -3- and remove cylinder.

    Information 

    • If the vehicle is placed on its wheels or moved in the workshop, the rear cross member must always be refitted beforehand. 
    • If the cross member is not refitted, the vehicle will have to be aligned after the engine is installed. 
  54. Lower the engine/transmission unit completely using the Master Gear unit elevating platform  .
