Removing Front Drive Shaft
WARNING:
Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly
- Risk of squashing
- Risk of damage to components
→ Wear personal protective gear.
→ Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
- To prevent damage to the drive shaft, suspension subframe or transmission flange, slide a protective tube (shop-made) 00000 over the drive shaft .
Information
- The pictures shown in this document may differ from the original .
- Unscrew fastening screws -1, 2- for holders -3, 4- for brake hydraulic lines.
- Loosen holder from wheel bearing housing -5- .
- Release electric plug connections -1- for speed sensor on wheel bearing housing -a- and pull them off -A- .
- Remove the brake calliper and suspend it at a suitable position in the wheel arch → Suspending brake calliper
(do not open brake hydraulics!).
Also protect the brake calliper (e.g. with a cloth or suitable rubber mat) to prevent damage to the paintwork.
- Remove the brake disc. → 465019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT BRAKE DISC
- Use universal drive shaft/wheel hub extractor as of model '86 Nr.87-1 to press out the pin of the drive shaft by max. → Length: 10 mm+5 mm (→ Pressing out drive shaft, max. 10 mm (shown as an example) ). When doing this, check drive shaft clearance on the halfshaft flange.
- Unscrew the fastening screw -2-
for the spring strut -3-
and at the same time, raise the axle support -1-
as far as required using a suitable jack -4-
so that the fastening screw can be unscrewed easily.
Make sure not to damage the brake cover plate .
- Secure the trailing arm -2-
at the top with the spring tensioner VW 552 spring tensioner VW 552 -1-
.
The spring tensioner is engaged in the top opening of the wheel housing and in the upper trailing arm and is tensioned slightly to avoid damaging the upper ball joint -3- .
- Remove the jack.
- Remove tie rod from the wheel bearing housing using ball joint puller T10187 . → 487919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TIE ROD
- Remove upper trailing arm from the wheel bearing housing using ball joint puller T10187 . → 401519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING UPPER TRAILING ARM (STEEL SPRINGS)
- Unscrew fastening screws -1- from the drive shaft on the transmission.
- One mechanic must carefully pull the upper wheel bearing housing out and turn the steering.
The second mechanic must carefully pull out the drive shaft.
- Secure the wheel bearing housing by fixing it in place in the upper control arm.
