Removing Wheel Bearing Housing

  1. Disengage parking-brake cable at the parking-brake lever.

    • Release the parking-brake lever (do not operate again until fitting is complete; self-adjusting).
    • Open cover of oddments tray in center console.
    • Remove bottom of oddments tray in center console.
    • Remove the relevant parking-brake cable sideways out of the turnbuckle.
  2. Open safety clip on combination plug connection -1-  and detach the connector. Dismantle the combination plug connection -1-  at the wheel bearing housing.

    Remove line for brake pad wear indicator from support on wheel carrier.

    Loosen fastening screw -2-  and remove the speed sensor.

  3. Loosen the drive shaft at the transmission and wheel bearing housing (only at the wheel bearing housing if the wheel bearing or wheel bearing housing needs to be replaced).
    1. 3.1. Loosen the drive shaft at the transmission.

    2. 3.2. To prevent damage to the drive shaft, slide a protective tube over the drive shaft -arrow-  .

    3. 3.3. Loosen the drive shaft at the wheel bearing housing (only if the wheel bearing or wheel bearing housing needs to be replaced).

      Using universal drive shaft/wheel hub puller from model 86 on Nr.87-1  carefully press out the pin of the drive shaft until the shaft can be moved by hand.

  4. Release brake calliper from wheel bearing housing (do not open brake system) and suspend it in the wheel arch.
  5. Pull boot of the parking-brake cable -2-  off the guide tube -1-  on the underbody.

  6. The following action, "Detach brake disc and remove parking-brake shoes" is only necessary if the wheel bearing or wheel bearing housing is replaced!

    1. 6.1. Remove brake disc and parking-brake shoes -1-  → REMOVING -
    2. 6.2. Disengage parking-brake cable at the actuating lever -6-  and pull it out of the guide on the wheel bearing housing.
  7. Unscrew linkage for headlight levelling system (headlight height adjustment) on the trailing arm (left side only). Counter with an open-ended wrench when doing this.
  8. Remove connecting link (suspension/stabilizer), spring strut, two upper control arms, toe and lower transverse control arm on wheel bearing housing.
    1. 8.1. Loosen the two upper trailing arms on the wheel bearing housing.

    2. 8.2. Remove toe and lower transverse control arm (on wheel bearing housing). On the 911 Turbo and 911 GT3, remove the spoiler (air guide for brake cooling system) at the diagonal control arm.

      Use the press-out tool 9560  for pressing out the ball joints. When loosening the lock nuts, counter at the ball-joint pin with a screwdriver 9546  (Torx screwdriver).

      To prevent damage to the rubber boots of the ball joint, coat the rubber boots and the press-out tool in this area with tire mounting paste.

    3. 8.3. Loosen connecting link for lower anti-roll bar -1-  and spring strut -2-  (on wheel bearing housing).

  9. Remove wheel bearing housing together with drive shaft.

    To pull the ball-joint pin out of the wheel bearing housing, pull the transverse control arm down evenly with both hands while swivelling the wheel bearing housing outwards. Get another person to help you with this.
