Installing Wheel Bearing Housing
Use new screws and lock nuts.
Use Optimoly HT to lightly grease the drive shaft toothing (in the wheel bearing housing) and the axle nut thread.
Observe correct tightening torques. Please note: Do not grease threaded connections in Dacromet finish - aluminum color!
- Insert wheel bearing housing together with drive shaft.
To insert the ball-joint pin into the wheel bearing housing, pull the transverse control arm down evenly with both hands while swivelling the wheel bearing housing inwards. Get a second person to help with this step.
- Fit connecting link (suspension/stabilizer), spring strut, two upper control arms, toe and lower transverse control arm on the wheel bearing housing.
- 2.1. Fit toe and lower transverse control arm (on the wheel bearing housing).
Special tool insert for torque wrench 9558 can be used to tighten the connection between the lower control arm and wheel bearing housing.
The advantage of this special tool is that it offers better access compared to a commercially available insert. A different value must be set on the torque wrench if insert 9558 is used! The nominal value 75 Nm (56 ftlb.) on the lock nut corresponds to a setting on the torque wrench of approx. 55 Nm (41 ftlb.).
→ Tightening torque: 75 Nm (56 ftlb.)
or if insert 9558 is used
→ Tightening torque: 55 Nm (41 ftlb.)
Counter at the ball joint pin when tightening the lock nuts on the ball joints using a screwdriver 9546 (Torx screwdriver).
On the 911 Turbo and 911 GT3, fit the spoiler (air guide for brake cooling system) on the diagonal control arm.
- 2.2. Fit spring strut on the wheel bearing housing -2-
.
→ Tightening torque: 110 Nm (81 ftlb.)
Fit connecting link for lower anti-roll bar -1- on the wheel bearing housing.
→ 3-step tightening procedure (Step 1: tighten to 50 Nm (37 ftlb.). Step 2: loosen by 90 degrees. Step 3: tighten to 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)).: 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)
- 2.3. Fit both upper trailing arms on the wheel bearing housing.
→ Tightening torque: 110 Nm (81 ftlb.)
- 2.1. Fit toe and lower transverse control arm (on the wheel bearing housing).
- Fit the drive shaft on the transmission.
Please note the different tightening torques for securing the drive shaft to the transmission (81 Nm (60 ftlb.) or 90 Nm (67 ftlb.))!
→ 4201TW TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR REAR AXLE .
If the M22 axle nut on the wheel bearing housing was removed, replace it with a new axle nut. Do not tighten the axle nut fully until later (when vehicle is lowered and resting on its own wheels). → Subsequent Work .
- Fit parking-brake shoes and brake disc → INSTALLING
→ Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
- Secure brake calliper on wheel bearing housing.
→ Tightening torque: 85 Nm (63 ftlb.)
- Fit linkage for headlight levelling system (headlight height adjustment) on trailing arm (left side only). Counter with an open-ended wrench when doing this. The sensor for the headlight levelling system does not need to be calibrated.
→ Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
- Install speed sensor -2-
→ INSTALLING REAR SPEED SENSOR
.
The bore for fitting the speed sensor must be perfectly clean and should be greased with Molykote Longterm 2 plus.
→ Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5. ftlb.)
Fasten combination wire -1- to wheel bearing housing.
→ Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
Connect electric connectors for combination wire for ABS and brake pad wear indicator and lock using a safety clip. Secure line for brake pad wear indicator on wheel carrier support.
- Slide boot of the parking-brake cable -2- onto the guide tube -1- on the underbody. Check that it is seated correctly.
- Fit (engage) the parking-brake cable on the parking-brake lever.
- Check parking-brake shoe setting and adjust if necessary → 468316 ADJUSTING PARKING-BRAKE SHOES . The parking-brake cable is adjusted automatically by operating the parking-brake lever several times in succession (self-adjusting).
- Remove protective tube for drive shaft -arrow- .
