Removing Front Drive Shaft

  1. Loosen the drive shaft at the wheel hub. Get another mechanic to help by operating the brake.
    1. 1.1. Procedure (for loosening the drive shaft at the wheel hub) on vehicles with central bolts: 
      1. 1.1.1. Remove lockable wheel bolt (locking mechanism).

      2. 1.1.2. Loosen/remove the hexagon nut -1-  using socket wrench 9471  .

  2. Carefully press the drive shaft journal out of the wheel hub until you can move the drive shaft with your hand.
    1. 2.1. On vehicles without central bolts, use puller set Nr.87-1 Pos.1  and tension bolt Nr.87-1 Pos.2  .

    2. 2.2. On vehicles with central bolts  , screw assembly aid 9794  (hub extension) -1-  (as far as it can go) into the wheel hub. The spindle -2-  must not yet touch the drive shaft. Turn the spindle -2-  as required if necessary.

      Turn the spindle -2-  to the right. Counter at the surface -3-  with an open-ended wrench (a/f 36 mm) while doing this.

      Keep turning the spindle -2-  until the drive shaft is pressed out of the wheel hub.

      Information 

      • Protect the drive shafts from mechanical damage. 
  3. Loosen drive shafts -1-  on the transmission side.
    1. 3.1. Unscrew drive shaft screws -1-  and counter at the relevant front wheel (press on the wheel to do this).

      WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down
      • Risk of squashing or crushing

      → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

      Information 

      • Remove front final drive in order to remove the front drive shaft. Failure to remove the front final drive can cause damage (consequential and prior damage to components around the drive shaft). 
      • This affects the axle joints, anti-roll bar mounts, PDCC actuator and in particular, the spring strut mount. 
  4. Remove front final drive. To do this, place transmission jack under the final drive (secure with retaining strap).

  5. Carefully guide the drive shaft out of the wheel hub and remove it.

    Do not damage the drive shaft and adjacent components.
