Subsequent Work
Information
- After replacing a tie rod, it is important to check whether the software version is identical on both sides or whether the ordered spare part has a lower software version.
- To do this, check the software version of both rear-axle steering adjusters (tie rods) using the PIWIS Tester ("Identification" > "Software version").
- If they are different and if one software version is less than "1006", use the flash code "M6J3U" to program the rear-axle steering to the same (latest) software version.
- Install wheel bearing housing with drive shaft fitted.
In other words: Contrary to the description → 425219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR WHEEL BEARING HOUSING , secure the drive shaft at the transmission (rather than fitting it on the wheel bearing housing).
- Install rear-axle cross member.
- Install cover for rear underbody.
→ 519419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COVER FOR REAR UNDERBODY .
On the 911 GT3 and Cabriolet , also install the support plate.
→ 421419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SUPPORT PLATE .
On the 911 GT3, install the protective plate for engine
- Install rear wheel housing liner. → 536919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR WHEEL HOUSING LINER .

Information
- A control unit is built into both the left and right rear-axle regulators -2- . After replacing the rear-axle regulator or after reinstalling the previous rear-axle regulator, the rear-axle steering has to be commissioned using the PIWIS Tester II. Observe the stipulated safety regulations!
- Commissioning (with the PIWIS Tester after maintenance/repairs) is always performed on both rear-axle regulators, irrespective of the choice of control unit (left or right). Pre-conditions are indicated by the PIWIS Tester II.
- Initial start-up of rear-axle steering PIWIS Tester II 9818
.WARNING: Moving components
- Danger of limbs being trapped or severed
→ Do not reach into the danger area.
→ Secure the system to prevent it from being activated accidentally.
→ Keep third parties away from the danger area.
Observe the instructions on the Tester.
- Check wheel alignment values. Make adjustments if necessary.
The PIWIS Tester II must be disconnected from the diagnostic socket.
The ignition must be turned on when checking and adjusting. This has the effect of blocking the rear tie rods (rear-axle regulator) in the correct position.
→ 449503 SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT, COMPLETE .
→ 4495TW ADJUSTMENT VALUES FOR SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT .
WARNING: Steering-angle sensor not calibrated or calibrated incorrectly- Unexpected vehicle handling
- Steering-angle sensor does not function
- Malfunction in steering-angle sensor
→ After working on wheel suspension parts, when replacing the steering-angle sensor and after changing the wheel alignment values, calibrate the steering-angle sensor using PIWIS Tester II 9818 .
→ Keep the front wheels in straight-ahead position on the measuring platform during calibration.
→ On vehicles with electromechanical steering, also re-teach the electric steering lock settings.
- The steering-angle sensor must be calibrated if the previous wheel alignment values (on rear and/or front axle) were changed! → 456005 INITIALIZE AND CALIBRATE STEERING-ANGLE SENSOR
.
In addition, calibrate the ACC sensor control unit and front camera (if fitted).
→ 278515 ADJUSTING THE DISTANCE MEASURING SENSOR CONTROL UNIT
- Once you have calibrated the steering-angle sensor, re-teach the electric steering lock settings with the engine running.
In each phase, turn the steering wheel fully to the right and then to the left and hold it at full lock for a short time (note the tester instructions).
