Installing Rear Wheel Bearing Housing
- Risk of crushing
- Risk of damage to components
- Wear personal protective gear.
- Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
The pictures shown in this document may differ from the original.
Information
Dimension X - lower edge of wing to centre of axle (shown as an example)
- All screws and bolts on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on its wheels, or the wheel suspension is raised with a universal vehicle lift. Dimension -X- , from lower edge of wing to centre of axle corresponds to vehicle position. For the current height values, please refer to the adjustment values for suspension alignment
- Visually inspect all parts.
- Replace self-locking nuts.
- Replace all expansion screws (screws fitted using torque angle tightening procedure).
- Use correct tightening torques and torque angle.
Information
Before installing the shaft, replace the lock ring (circlip) on the shaft as well as the shaft sealing ring in the final drive
> 392255 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SEALING RING FOR HALFSHAFT FLANGE (WITHOUT DIFFERENTIAL LOCK) .
Make sure not to damage the sealing ring when guiding the shaft into the final drive.
- The inner end of the drive shaft must be held with both hands at the joint and inserted into the rear axle differential with a quick jerk. The outer joint must be held by a second mechanic in order to prevent damage.
- Check that the joint is seated correctly in the rear axle differential: Hold the joint with both hands and pull outwards.
- Visually check that the plastic protective rings are flush on the rear axle differential.
- Grease the splines with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste and fit the drive shaft -1-
into the wheel bearing housing -2-
(-A-
). When doing this, press the inner joint together fully.

Information
Fitting tool T10206 (shown as an example)
- Pull in the drive shaft as far as it will go using the > T10206 - fitting tool.
- Pull the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing.
- Grease the mounting-face ring of the axle nut with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste. Fit the axle nut.
- After the drive shaft has been pulled into the wheel bearing housing, it must be pre-tightened to the specified tightening torque.
Pulling in drive shaft (shown as an example)
- 4.1 In the 1st step, "before installing the wheel bearing housing", pull the drive shaft into the wheel hub in with > Tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.)
. To do this, place the wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft and tool on the floor (do not damage the brake cover plate) and pull in the drive shaft -Arrow-
. 2nd mechanic is required!
In the 2nd step, tighten the drive shaft "fitted in the vehicle" to the prescribed tightening torque!
- 4.2 The 2nd tightening step is performed when the wheel bearing housing is installed in the section on "Subsequent work"! Observe the tightening torque.
- Left side: Replace the protective plastic ring that was damaged irreparably during removal.
- Use a new sealing ring in the rear axle-differential and a new protective ring and circlip on the drive shaft.
- Fit the wheel bearing housing (2nd mechanic required). First, fit the drive shaft on the rear-axle differential housing with a quick, strong blow.
To make installation easier, raise the wheel mount slightly with a universal vehicle lift! Use a rubber base to prevent the wheel carrier from slipping! > Steering tie rod assembly aid (shown as an example)

- Fit the screws -1, 2-
on the inside of the two upper wishbones.
Threading on inner control arms
- 8.1 Rear control arm at rear axle carrier: > Initial tightening 90 Nm (66.4 ftlb.) > Final tightening + 90°
- 8.2 Front control arm at rear axle carrier: > Initial tightening 90 Nm (66.4 ftlb.) > Final tightening + 90°
- Fit the lower trailing arm -2-
on the wheel bearing housing -1-
.
