Installing Rear Wheel Bearing Housing

  • Risk of crushing

    • Wear personal protective gear.
    • Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

Before installing the shaft, replace the lock ring (circlip) on the shaft as well as the shaft sealing ring n the final drive

> 392255 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SEALING RING FOR HALFSHAFT FLANGE (WITHOUT DIFFERENTIAL LOCK)

Make sure not to damage the sealing ring when guiding the shaft into the final drive.

  1. Grease the splines with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste and fit the drive shaft -1-  into the wheel bearing housing -2-A-  . When doing this, press the inner joint together fully.

    Fitting tool T10206 (shown as an example)

    Information 

    • Pull in the drive shaft as far as it will go using the > T10206 - fitting tool  .
  2. Pull the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing.
  3. Grease contact-face ring of axle nut with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste. Fit new axle nut.
  4. After you have pulled the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing, it still needs to be pre-tightened to the specified tightening torque.

    Pull in drive shaft

    1. 4.1  In the 1st step, "before installation" tighten drive shaft to > Tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.)  --.

      Place the wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft and tool on the floor (do not damage brake cover plate) and pull in the drive shaft. A helper is required! -Arrow-  .

    2. 4.2  The 2nd tightening step is performed when the wheel bearing housing is installed in the "Subsequent work" section.
  5. Left side: Replace the protective plastic ring that was irreparably damaged during removal.
  6. Use a new sealing ring in the rear axle-differential and a new protective ring and circlip on the drive shaft.
  7. Fit the wheel bearing housing (2nd mechanic required). First, fit the drive shaft on the rear-axle differential housing with a quick, strong blow.

    To make installation easier, raise the wheel mount slightly with a universal vehicle lift! Use a rubber pad to prevent the wheel carrier from slipping! > Lifting wheel bearing housing (example)

  8. Fit new bolts -1, 2-  on the inside of the two upper, wishbones.

    Front upper trailing arm on rear-axle carrier: > Initial tightening 90 Nm (66.4 ftlb.)  -- > Final tightening + 90  °

    Rear upper trailing arm on rear-axle carrier: > Initial tightening 90 Nm (66.4 ftlb.)  -- > Final tightening + 90  °

    Inner control arm bolts

  9. Fit lower control arm -2-  on the wheel bearing housing with new bolt -1-  .

    > 421119 REMOVE AND INSTALL LOWER TRAILING ARM  - "Installing" section

    > Initial tightening 150 Nm (110.6 ftlb.) -- > Final tightening + 90  ° --

    Lower trailing arm bolts

  10. Fit the steering tie rod (toe control arm) on the wheel bearing housing with new bolt.

    > Initial tightening 150 Nm (110.6 ftlb.) --. > Final tightening + 90  ° --

  11. Fit spring strut with a new bolt on the wheel bearing housing.

    > 427119 REMOVE AND INSTALL REAR SPRING STRUT (STEEL SPRINGS) - "Installing" section

    > Initial tightening 90 Nm (66.4 ftlb.) -- > Final tightening + 90  ° --

  12. Fit the brake disc if necessary.

    > 465319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING THE BRAKE DISC REAR - section on "Installing"

    1. 12.1  Fit the brake calliper.

      > 474119 REMOVE AND INSTALL THE BRAKE CALLIPER REAR - section on "Installing"

  13. Plug in the central connector -1-  for the ABS wire harness -A-  and lock it -a-.

  14. Clip the mounting -2-  for the ABS wire harness into the position designed for it -3-  on the body -B-  .
