Installing Automatic Transmission

- If the transmission is replaced, the adaptation values must be reset using the Porsche System Tester.

→ When securing the transmission, check that the torque converter can turn freely and is not jammed.
→ Do not use force when screwing the engine and transmission together
Information
- The torque converter can tilt slightly despite being seated correctly in the transmission.
- When checking the installation dimension, make sure that the torque converter is as vertical as possible with respect to the transmission flange.
- The help of another person is required when guiding in the transmission.
- Before installing the automatic transmission, make sure that the torque converter is seated correctly in the transmission be" housing.
- Insert the magnetic > 9689 - centering pin-1- into a screw bore in the torque converter.
- 2.1 Align the torque converter using the centering pin in such a way that the centering pin is flush with the relevant bore in the drive plate.
- 2.2 Insert a > 9595 - locating pin into the bore on the transmission bell housing in order to secure the torque converter.

Information
- Get one or more people to help when installing/removing heavy of difficult to-reach components.
- This will prevent or reduce the risk of possible damage.
Information
- When removing and installing the transmission, make sure that the torque converter does not slip out of the transmission.
- Secure the torque converter through the bore on the underside of the transmission with a > 9595 - locating pin.
- Gradually guide in the automatic transmission with the help of another person.

Use the > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack
to lift the automatic transmission as required and push it forward so that it can be positioned on the engine.
The dowel sleeves on the engine flange must fit into the bores on the transmission flange.

- Fit and tighten new aluminum screws -1-
with the holders -2-
for the primary catalytic converters.
- 4.1 Only fit the screws loosely on the holders.
Fitting automatic transmission screws
- > 9689 - Centering pin must then be pulled off.

- When loosening or tightening the converter screws, the help of another person is required in order to turn the engine.
- Check the position of the converter screws using a mirror.
- The converter screws must be replaced.
- Only fit new screws for the torque converter initially.

- 6.2 For each screw, get another person to continue to turn the crankshaft clockwise using > 9714 - socket-wrench insert and a torque wrench.

Fit a new screw on special tool > 9688 - bit insert and screw in screw -arrow-

- > 9687 - Insert part must be fitted on the bit insert. Then fit screw loosely, but do not tighten it.

- Complete the steps described above for each screw.
- Pull off the > 9595 - locating pin before tightening the converter screws.CAUTION: Damage to converter screws due to excessive tightening torque.
- Risk of damage to screw thread or torque converter.
Observe specified adjustment value for torque wrench. 65 Nm (48 ftlb.) on torque wrench = 85 Nm (63 ftlb.) on the screw.

- Tighten screws for torque converter.
- 10.1 Get another person to continue to turn the crankshaft for each screw.
- 10.2 Check the position of the screws using a mirror. Correct the position if necessary by turning the crankshaft.

Tighten screws using a magnetic bit insert, insert part and torque wrench.
Make sure that the torque wrench is set to 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)!

- Insert plug for converter assembly opening. To do this, moisten the groove on the plug with water.

- Fit primary catalytic converter with a new seal loosely on the flange.
Fit both primary catalytc converters on turbo vehicles.
- Tighten aluminum screws on the engine/transmission flange using special tool > 9768 - electronic torque wrench, 2 - 100 Nm/1.5 - 74 ftlb.-1-

Given the limited accessibility, tighten the two bottom screws using the tools specified in Step 15 and to the specified torque!
- 14.1 Tighten the side and upper threaded joint:
> Initial tightening 38 (28 ftlb.) Nm --
> Final tightening torque angle 90 Degree --

Secure line at the retaining clip for coolant lines.
