Installing Spring Strut

Information 

• Protect electric line as required when installing the spring strut on vehicles with PASM. 
• Do not lift/transport the spring strut/vibration damper at the electric lines. 
• A second mechanic is needed in order to install the spring strut/wheel bearing housing. 
• Make sure that the retaining pins do not damage the paint surface when fitting the spring strut mount. (Seal damaged areas with suitable preservative). 
• Use correct tightening torques and torque angle. →  4X00IN TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR FRONT AXLE  . 
• Always replace lock nuts. 

1. Insert spring strut -1-  into the wheel bearing housing -2-  as far as it will go -arrow from left-  .

   Tighten clamped connection between spring strut/wheel bearing housing.

   Vehicles without PDCC:  Fit connecting link. Counter with an open-ended wrench when tightening. Tightening torque 85 Nm (63 ftlb.) 

   Vehicles with PDCC:  Fit/tighten hexagon-head bolt (M12 x 70) and lock nut. Tightening torque 85 Nm (63 ftlb.)

2. Guide spring strut/wheel bearing housing into the wheel housing and fit it on the body (observe markings). Get another person to help you with this.

   Use new lock nuts. Tightening torque 33 Nm (24 ftlb.) 

   On all-wheel drive vehicles  , the drive shaft toothing is greased with Optimoly HT (copper-based paste).

   Re-grease if necessary.

   The thread must be free of grease.

3. Connect plug connection for PASM (only on vehicles with PASM).
4. Fit lower trailing arm and tie-rod ball on wheel bearing housing.

   Lower trailing arm Tightening torque 85 Nm (63 ftlb.) 

   Tie-rod ball Tightening torque 85 Nm (63 ftlb.) 

   When tightening the lock nuts, counter at the ball-joint pins using special tool screwdriver 9546  (Torx screwdriver).

5. Fit linkage for height sensor on the trailing arm.
6. Fit connecting link (for vehicles without PDCC) on the anti-roll bar.
7. Vehicles with PDCC:  Fit actuator at the spring strut (actuator holder). Initial tightening 50 Nm (37 ftlb.)

8. Fit retaining bracket for brake hose/speed sensor line and wear indicator on the wheel bearing housing.
9. Connect plug connection for speed sensor.
