Removing Rear Spring Strut

  1. Remove brake air spoiler.

    1. 1.1. Unscrew fastening screws -1-  .
    2. 1.2. Move brake air spoiler in direction of travel -arrow A-  and remove it by pulling it downwards -arrow B-  .

      Information 

      • The rear brake calliper must be removed so that the brake hose does not become strained or damaged on wheel suspension parts during assembly work  .
      • Do not open the brake hydraulic system (brake line remains connected)  .
  2. Remove rear brake calliper with line bracket.

    1. 2.1. Release and unplug electric plug connection for electric parking brake (EPB) -1-  and unclip it from the cable retainer -2-  .
    2. 2.2. Release and disconnect electric plug connection for RPM sensor -3-  .
    3. 2.3. Release and disconnect electric plug connection for PASM -4-  and unclip cable retainer -5-  from its holder -7-  .
    4. 2.4. Unscrew and remove fastening screws -6-  securing holder to wheel bearing housing.
    5. 2.5. Evenly set back brake pads a little using water pump pliers.

      Information 

      • Never use an impact bolter to loosen and tighten the brake calliper on the wheel carrier  .
    6. 2.6. Unscrew and remove fastening screws -arrows-  .

    7. 2.7. Remove the brake calliper together with the holder from the wheel bearing housing and hang it at a suitable position, e.g. using a piece of wire, in the wheel housing. Make sure that the brake pressure line is not strained.
  3. Loosen toe control arm and rear trailing arm.
    1. 3.1. Screw off fastening nut -1-  .

    2. 3.2. Pull off toe control arm -2-  using a puller Press-out tool 9560 -3-  on the wheel carrier.
    3. 3.3. Unscrew fastening screw -4-  from the trailing arm -5-  .
  4. Loosen anti-roll bar.

    1. 4.1. Screw off fastening nut -1-  and pull off connecting link -2-  on the anti-roll bar.
  5. Loosen drive shaft at the wheel carrier.

    1. 5.1. Carefully press out the drive shaft peg using puller set Nr.87-1 Pos.1  until you can move the shaft with your hand.

      To prevent damage to the drive shaft, slide a protective hose over the drive shaft.

  6. Loosen and remove upper spring strut. Support the drive shaft when taking it out of the wheel carrier and tie immediately to a suitable location. Get another person to help you with this.
    1. 6.1. Screw three fastening nuts -1-  off the spring-strut mount.

    2. 6.2. Lower the spring strut and the wheel carrier out of the vehicle.

      For vehicles with PCCB brake discs, ensure that the brake disc is not damaged as you remove it. → 465402 CHECKING REAR PCCB BRAKE DISCS (WEAR ASSESSMENT) .

      After removing the drive shaft from the wheel carrier, tie it immediately to a suitable location.

  7. Loosen clamped connection between spring strut/wheel carrier. Pull spring strut out of wheel carrier.

    1. 7.1. Screw off fastening nut -5-  and pull out connecting link (suspension/stabilizer) -3-  .

      Counter the hexagon wrench face of the connecting link -arrow-  when loosening the fastening nut.

    2. 7.2. Unscrew fastening nut -6-  , pull out clamping screw -2-  and pull spring strut -1-  out of the wheel carrier -4-  .
