Assembling Rear Spring Strut

Clamp the spring strut at a suitable place in the vice (use protective jaws).
Information
- When installing new components, always check that they are assigned correctly.
- Coil springs are only available in pairs.
- Vibration damper 991.333.053.04 may only be replaced by 991.333.053.08 in pairs (modified inner stop). As a result the circlip position also has to be changed (see table).

When replacing the vibration damper, fit a new circlip -11- - using circlip pliers VW 161 A - in the relevant groove -A, B, C, D or E- (see allocation in next table).

Fit bottom concave washer -10- with the groove downwards facing the circlip -11- . Ensure that the circlip -11- and concave washer -10- are seated correctly.

⁽¹⁾	If vibration dampers 991.333.053.04 are replaced by 991.333.053.08 (only permitted in pairs due to modified inner stop), then the circlip position must also be changed (adjust rear axle height). Groove B-C becomes groove A-B/groove C-D becomes groove B-C.

Place pre-tensioned coil spring (with the narrower end of the spring) on the vibration damper.
Slide the bellows/additional spring assembly onto the piston rod.
Fit washer.
Position insert -2- , supporting mount -3- , concave washer -4- and spring plate -5- at the correct position on the piston rod.
Place the lug of the spring plate into the groove on the concave washer -bottom arrow- .

Place the lugs of the supporting mount into the groove on the insert -top arrows- .

Fit new lock nuts on the piston rod. Place the end of the coil spring on the concave washer stop -arrow- .

Align (position) the spring-strut supporting mount -as in illustration- with the vibration damper.

Tighten lock nut using socket-wrench insert Nr.18 .
Counter at the piston rod with a 9-mm open-ended wrench when tightening the lock nut.

Tightening torque approx.34 Nm (33.5) (25 (24.5) ftlb.)

Remove spring clamp.
