Installing Rear Wheel Bearing

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2019 Porsche 911, 2018 Porsche 911, 2017 Porsche 911, 2016 Porsche 911, and 2015 Porsche 911. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Hot components
  • Risk of burns

→ Let hot components cool down.

→ Wear personal protective gear.

WARNING: Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic press
  • Risk of squashing

→ Read specific safety information for the press.

→ Check that the press is working perfectly before use, particularly the safety components.

  1. Before installing, clean the wheel bearing and the bore in the wheel bearing housing. Remove any edges with a polishing cloth.
  2. Heat the wheel bearing housing -1-  to about 80 °C (max. 100 °C) using a heating plate -2-  .

    Information

    • The wheel bearings generate the pulse for the speed sensor (wheel speed). They are fitted for this purpose with a so-called multipole seal that has a magnetized layer.
    • The multipole seal must not come into contact with highly magnetic parts (for example, a magnetic screwdriver or magnet).
    • Installing the wheel bearing: The magnetic side must face the speed sensor (the inside of the wheel bearing housing). Isolate using a test card Nr.147-2 or paper clip.
  3. Press in the wheel bearing  in the correct position (because of engine-speed signal) using tool -1 and 2-  .

    1. 3.1. Place a suitable stamp in the workshop press.

Position the pipe T10230/14 under the workshop press -1-  and place the wheel bearing housing flat on top. Install the wheel bearing straight and in the correct position.

Place pressure piece T10205/10 -2-  flush against the wheel bearing -side arrows-  .

Carefully press the wheel bearing in as far as it will go -direction arrow-  (check the pressure gauge! When the pressure increases rapidly, the wheel bearing is in its installation position).

  4. Fit the wheel bearing cover to the wheel bearing housing in the correct position (water outlets point downwards).

Tightening torque (M8 screws) 37 Nm.

  5. Press in wheel hub using tool -1 to 3-.
    1. -1-  - Press-on sleeve 9694/3
    2. -2-  - Pressure piece 30-205

    1. 5.1. Position the press-on sleeve 9694/3 -1-  together with the inserted pressure piece 30-205 -2-  under the workshop press.

Place the wheel bearing housing and wheel bearing inner race flat on press-on sleeve 9694/3 -1-  (or on pressure piece 30-205) -2-  .

Centre the wheel bearing inner race on pressure piece 30-205 -2-  .

    2. 5.2. Place the pressure piece T10205/10 flat on the -3-  wheel hub. Ensure that the wheel bearing inner race is positioned flat and centrally on the press-on sleeve 9694/3 -1-  (or on the pressure piece 30-205) -2-  .

Carefully press in the wheel hub until the pressure increases (check the pressure gauge) -direction arrow-  .
